The nose is immediately spicy with floral rye, charred oak, pepper, smoke and a touch of brine. It is very full and bold, and mellows out the more you visit it - as in you adapt rather than it is mellowing. Smelling it frequently allows you to move beyond the spice and see what is behind it. There are some touches of vanilla and caramel, and maybe the slightest bit of fruit. In any case, it is absolutely wonderful to experience. The palate is smoother than expected as you swirl it around and chew on it's richness, but that soon turns into filling the mouth with a controlled burst of rye spice as you swallow. There is a slight funk to it, discernable yet can't quite narrow down what it is, but it is certainly from the rye grain. It adds a nice element of flavor on top of an already great experience. If you look for it, you'll find some sweetness lurking in the background but it really isn't needed. The finish is long and chewy, leaving the mouth tingly and hot with lingering notes of rye spice and that funk. Really delicious and unique rye, has an almost vintage taste to it. A great one that will be missed.
