Not often do I get excited and impressed about having found something that I was passively looking for, but this hit that part of my brain earlier today. After this released, I wrote it off to never be found, let alone in Ohio, but there it was, on the "regular" shelf, and at MSRP! I don't care who you are, if you're shopping in the American whiskey asile and you see the word "Singapore," your interest will be piqued. Plus, knowing and having sampled many, if not all the Jefferson's line of products, I've always been interested in the different finishing processes they've used, especially the location-based ones from the Ocean line. The idea of playing with the environment on the aging process is such a unique, genius breakaway from the safe, almost milk-toast weather of Kentucky. With the Ocean barrels proving these environment changes are noticeable, the humid and much hotter finish in Singapore sounds like both a safe and delicious entry into the Tropics series. With the added finishing time in the much hotter environment, I would expect a much darker color from the accelerated barrel interaction, but instead it's somewhere between sherry and copper with a touch of light gold. The nose is nutty and full of dark caramel, with an approachable ethanol and a touch of cinnamon. There's also a strange sourness after repeated scents, but is also somehow raw and sweet, like drinking cooking sherry with a sugar-coated glass. The initial flavor digs well into the gums, and becomes spicy quite quickly. Actually, the spice is quite aggressive, like sucking on a cinnamon stick dipped in pure high wine while chewing through some Red Hots. This calms down after a short time, while light caramel and young corn begin taking over. This continues through the finish, which is dry, but fades very quickly. It really only occurs to me now that, although expectations for this were high, the simplicity behind it makes it easier to detect the differences from the finishing process. The intensity from the Singapore weather created a whiskey that's both hot and aggressive (fitting for cask strength drinkers), but would also benefit greatly from a couple ice cups to cool it down and unlock a few more layers. I still think this is a great first entry for the Tropics series, but the premium is too high for flavors that can be found in similarly priced products, some of which with much higher age statements, if you take the time to search.
About this bottle
Founder Trey Zoeller continues unique maturations in his Jefferson's Bourbon portfolio with this Tropics Aged in Humidity expression. Nine containers filled with a total of 720 fully-matured Kentucky straight bourbon barrels were shipped to Singapore via an ocean ship in July 2019. The barrels then spent 18 months in the hot, humid climate of Singapore before making a return trip to Kentucky in March 2023. Zoeller then evaluated, selected, and blended the bourbon bottling it at 52% ABV. Available in the US beginning September 2023. (SRP $99.99)

Nose offers toasted marshmallow, root beer, banana, clove, hay, and cedar. Nicely robust and complex. On the palate we have bright MGP goodness with a hint of “darker” notes. Caramel, vanilla, apricot, barrel char, orange, and burnt sugar. Flavors very rich for the proof. Finish is longer side of medium with flavors slowly morphing into a spice bloom of cinnamon, black pepper, and allspice along with the cedar from the nose and some choclate. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and sufficiently oily to match the flavor profile well. I know that Jefferson’s Ocean is widely accused of being a gimmick, but so far the line has not disappointed. A “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” bourbon. I was pleasantly surprised as I enjoyed the cohesive, integrated experience with no major flaws. At $104 I paid it is neither a bargain, nor overpriced. Would rebuy budget permitting for the uniqueness of the experience.
After a certain drummer themed bourbon channel recommended this i decided to give this a go. I still have a warm place in my hear from the days of Jefferson's Presidential bottles...being available. So hoping for good stuff. nose - Well they added a boat load (no pun intended) of oak to a clearly young bourbon. This is different. It still has that kentucky bourbon feel vs say a Texas bottle. Light citrus...basic bourbon notes. Taste - This is a flavor bomb. This is reminding me of a top barrel rick house single of some of these younger distilleries. Intense oak over youthful and still somewhat vegetal based bourbon. Honestly it's a 1.0 but I'll give it a full .5 stars for the huge flavor and presence. But yeah...below average stuff, just a flavor bomb for those chasing more flavor but not that picky.
I’ve always put Jeffersons on a pedestal, but in recent years I’ve been disappointed in the Jefferson Manhattan, oceans and the Marian McClain. Jefferson’s Tropics was sitting on the shelf, one bottle left. I had not seen it before. Did a Google and ended up, leaving it and walking out but before I pulled out of the parking lot, I convinced myself to go back in and take a chance. This bottle gave me faith in Jefferson’s and distillers trying unique methods. At 104 proof, I almost finished the bottle when I first opened it. A very tasty easy drinker, I wish there was more produced, and it was easier to find. Great bottle if you can get your hands on it.
Nose: vanilla, leather, cedar. Cinnamon Taste: first initial taste has some spice and caramel. Very nice long lasting finish where you get some real nice spice like cinnamon stick ish taste Thoughts: very few bottles i would have dropped $100 on without trying first but this concept was too cool for me to not try it out. Couple that with jeffersons has bought aome good will with me. I have yet to try anything from jeffersons i didnt like at least a little. In the end i think it does justify the price. Its different than anything else ive had and the finish is very enjoyable.
This is a great bourbon. For me the nose is kinda like a cinnamon roll with Icing on top, very easy nose you can enjoy. Up front its very smooth and easy on the pallet, the finish is awesome with a long Kentucky hug, not too spicy and not too hot of a proof at all but just enough.. Very delightful bourbon, it somewhat to me resembles a birthday bourbon by old forester... I say Cinnamon because of the nose but its just enough to notice on the take and somewhat holds true to the nose for me all around..
