Sherry fruitiness on the nose, orange peel, along with the classic bourbon caramels. Seems to be a nice balance between the bourbon and the finishes that carries through to the palate. Nice viscous mouthfeel. Getting a lot of wood and spice on the finish. I'm a little conflicted about scoring this one. I liked it, but I can't see myself being a buyer at the price. I did have a sip of another MGP-sourced Belle Meade Reserve, and the Belle came across as fairly pedestrian in comparison, and I gave the Belle a 4 (although it did get a boost for value when I was able to stock up on them for $30). It doesn't seem like this warrants much more than 4 stars, but I clearly like it more than the Belle at 4. 4.25 it is then, but I feel a little cornered-in to that score. Once again, thank you for the sample @ctbeck11
Joseph Magnus Triple Cask Finished Bourbon
About this bottle
A team of industry experts were inspired to recreate the original Joseph Magnus recipe from the 1890s, after discovering old bottles of and sampling some of the century-old pre-prohibition era bourbon. Using sourced 8 to 9-year old bourbon from MGP in Indiana, the Jos. A. Magnus & Co. distillery then triple-cask finishes the bourbon in used oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximenez sherry, and cognac casks.

This bourbon is an elusive beast. Price fluctuates widely and it’s hard to know whether you’re buying a pretender or a contender. I just had to know so i finally pulled the trigger. Highly polished woodsy vanilla caramel nose. Palate adds cherry and orange to a stiff oaky background with swirling toffee, cocoa, cinnamon and brown sugar. Syrupy and smooth. The proof and sweetness are nicely balanced. Lots of char, fruit and spices on the finish. The proverbial hint of mint. Pairs well with a cigar. A very good bourbon of the dark wintry variety. Is it worth the $? It’s sophisticated…but I’ll need to line up a few bottles including Knob C 120 and Old F 1920 to find out.
👃 wearing an intake strip, so this should be fun 😁 (for the record, it was actually really nice. Try it or just a breathe right strip if you haven't) classic caramel and oak plus some fruity notes like pineapple and watermelon 👄 Popcorn. Closer to the tip of the tounge. Maybe that caramel was drizzled on top 🏁 Warm, but not hot. Kentucky hug they call it. Very smooth. The digestion and exhale and consistent and flavorful 9/10. This would be one of the best bottles under $60 if it cost less than $60
Nose- herbal tea, pear, honey, light oak, malty, baking spice, raisins Palate- caramel, cherry syrup, apple, raisin, baking spice, oak Finish- medium and drying with slight spice, vanilla and apple This Triple cask makes me think of a refreshing drink on a bright summer day. It drinks very light and fruity across the board. The bourbon comes through nicely but there is definite influence from the sherry and cognac casks. A very nice whiskey.
Deep, lasting caramel all the way through. Candy corn, bitter French oak spice, nonspecific cognac/ugni blanc grape, red plum, nutmeg, clove, buttery, caraway, apricot, herbal mint, mandarin oranges, floral dew. The PX Sherry influence was more subdued and pleasant compared to other whiskys. Reminds me of dickel a little. Could be since it's a blend.
Aroma you get all the finishes on the nose especially the brandies, lots of fig and dried fruits. Pretty pleasant nose Flavor is quite sweet yet has a tart/mineral flavor I'm not fond of. Finishes with a fair amount of oak dried fruits and cherries. I'm torn on this one. So much I like about it but there is some off putting notes I can't get past.
