A very personal expression of an Islay malt: it keeps the smokey and wild touch but adds some very interesting sweet and creamy notes. It starts on the nose with a sweet but wild smokiness, with a hint of saltiness combined with a bit of fudge. On the palate it begins with a spiciness that quickly disappears, leaving the smoky touch typical of the area at the bottom of the tongue. A rich and somewhat creamy flavor is maintained on the palate, with salty and woody nuances. It ends with a smooth throat but a strong tongue, returning the spiciness and smokiness after the sweetness and notes of vanilla.
About this bottle
First released in March 2016, the Sanaig is a no-age-statement single malt from the Kilchoman Distillery on Islay. Along with the Machir Bay, it's part of the Kilchoman core range of continuously available expressions. Both are made from a marriage of malts matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. While the Machir Bay has more bourbon-barrel aged whisky, the Sanaig is predominantly Oloroso sherry cask influenced. Bottled at 46% ABV, it is non-chill-filtered without added coloring.

Nose - peaty, salty, faint bit of smokeyness Taste - a good amount of smokeyness that transitions into sweet Finish - quite smooth and somewhat fruity and mostly sweet, leaves an almost sugary taste in the mouth. The sweet and sugary finish decreases intensity as the bottle went on past the first 1/3. Score - 4.0, very interesting drink, smokey and peat with sweetness is a recipe that I am pleasantly surprised by Scoring Legend 5.0 - Outstanding, unmatched to others 4.5 - Excellent, I will always keep a bottle in stock if possible 4.0 - Very good, quite enjoyable to drink, can consider as a solid choice 3.5 - Good, would taste again 3.0 - Average 2.5 - Acceptable, still drinkable 2.0 - Inferior, able to drink but not enjoyable 1.5 and below—wouldn’t drink again unless I am desperate
Nose is sweet cereal and candied fruit. Some darker earth and leather notes after it settles. There is some smoke like from the inside of a cold grill. Palate is river stone, iodine, smoke, sweet dried fruit. It develops slowly and those flavors keep going around and around each other. Very enjoyable dram. The back and is smoky and sweet that lasts into a long smoky finish. Some water brings dark cocoa on the nose and the palate gets a bit darker and adds deep dark chocolate and coffee notes that last well into the finish.
First time trying any Kilchoman offering as it was part of an Islay Sherry Cask blind flight. It was enjoyable and definitely piqued my interest to try more from this distillery. It had a very pleasant balance of sea breeze and light peat with a full palate and a nice medium length finish. Ironically, in a blind tasting it beat out Lagavulin which is the original scotch that made me an Islay/peat fan for life.
Caramel colored appearance to it than some. More rounded peat nose with some vanilla or toffee present. Taste has a very pronounced smoke flavor to it with a bit of malted barley. It's balanced by the sweetness that still seems to have vanilla or toffee backings to it. The finish pleasant an balanced with a little bit of pepper or spice to it.
