About this bottle
Harking back to the days of the 19th century, this bottling takes 5-11 year old aged whisky into smaller casks only 125 liters large (a quarter of a Sherry cask). This was the size that two men could carry to market for sale back in the day. Giving more surface area to the amount of liquid in the barrel brings out more vanilla and oily notes from the wood.

I stumbled upon this bottle, and I'm glad I did. I was at a Lounge, and after glancing at their back shelf, I noticed that Laphroaig Quarter Cask was the only bottle they had that wasn’t a mainstream mixer. I asked to order an ounce neat, and that began my encounter. I’m not overly familiar with peated scotch, but I’ve had Laphroaig 10yr and a few others. I can’t completely recall my L10 experience, but I had a good idea of what to expect from Laphroaig. The nose started how I recall L10, but as I sat with LQC, it began to open up into a very unique experience. I got Peat, Smoke, and Briney notes off the top, evolving into sweet honey floral notes, and then one level further with berry and cherry notes. The palette is a rich experience that coats your mouth with a spicy start. I love the spicy tingle that erupts. A well-balanced mix of smoke and floral sweetness follows that. It's hard to explain, but I would say the sweetness helps balance the harshness of the smoky peat. The finish is smooth. I think the proof point is perfect at 98. It is complete, helping to carry all of the flavour. The smoky, peaty, and salty notes you get at the start come back at the end like a faint breeze fading away over the countryside. Laphroaig does a bang-up job with its branding. The bottle and case are classic. I love how they gave me a little booklet detailing how to claim a sq/ft of islay. It's pretty cool for a Canadian Boy who lives on the prairies, nowhere near an ocean. This will be a bottle that I will be returning to repeatedly. 9.25/10
A—B with Laphroaig 10, thoughts a bit scattered as i try and compare. Nose: compared to the 10, there is a massive amount of wood on this nose. Sharp oak and vanilla balance well with a peaty, smokey element. There is a substantial brine as well, but the star of the show here is the wood. Peppery, baking spice, nutmeg. The 10 is much more phenolic, and rubbery, like fresh playdough. Coming back to the quarter cask after smelling the 10 brings out some tobacco, leather, and pine/cedar Palate: definitely getting more wood here too. Burnt sugar, warm toasty oak, cinnamon, sweet vanilla and caramel. The peat is here for sure but it comes in more on the transition to finish. Getting hints of green apple but I may be insane. Getting more peat throughout as I sit with it, but theres a hint of a light red fruit sweetness? Theres a little hint of a maritime breeze. A hint of burning wet tree moss as it moves to finish. The 10 has more fresh malt character, and medicinal peaty elements. The smoke is more prominent on the 10 as is the brine. Finish: rubbery phenols come out most here, oak tannins here are significantly more prominent than in the 10, as expected. Drying and tongue coating. 10 has more salinity. 10 gives more ash, phenols, and earthy peat fire on the finish.
June 3, 2023 - tested a blind line up of 10, 10S, QC and Lore. Samples were in coloured glencairn glasses. Ranked nose 10, 10S, Lore, QC. Partner ranked Lore 1st, 10, 10S, QC. Predicting what each one was - we were wrong 75% of the time. The 10 was guessed as Lore and QC. Lore was guessed as 10 and 10S. Advancing from first head to head for me was 10 and 10S. Partner picked Lore and 10. Me 10, 10S, Lore, QC Partner 10, Lore, 10S, QC QC was ranked 4th for both of us and was a distant 4th. Maybe the 43% for the 10 versus all the rest at 48% made it appear better balanced. The nose and flavour are lively on the 10 and it stands up well in the family line up. Conclusions - 10 is the flagship release for a reason and maybe the best value in Islay. Lore is not worth the premium over the 10. Quarter Cask, which I expected to stand out, is not one I would buy.
Laphroaig 10 year is arguably my favourite single malt that I've tried so far, so I've been looking forward to trying another offering from them. This seems to be the logical next step. I'm tasting this dram along with a nip of the 10 year, and some Bowmore 15 for a fruity contrast. Nose is savory like a roast chicken dinner mixed with sawdust. Smoke is present but taking a backseat to the salty, meaty notes. Palate is oily and hot, a little bit spicy and still very savoury. No caramel, vanilla or sweetness here like the 10 year. Finish is very lengthy and extremely oaky and tannic. It starts like a Chardonnay and ends like a used tea bag. Leaves you wanting more. I would still rate the 10 year higher, but this is very good. Have this one with your Sunday dinner and have the 10 year for dessert.
This last dram has been sitting at the bottom of this bottle for quite some time, so the flavor and nose are probably a little off, but it's still good and it's still Laphroaig. Nose: pungent peat reek, creosote, a strong amount of brine. A decent warm oakiness, a slight hint of lemon vanilla cream, baking spice, candied ginger and cinnamon Palate: a relatively strong vanilla that smooths out and becomes more creamy as your palate acclimates. Biting woody oak tannin, classic Laphroaig medicinal notes. I do love how the extra wood contact plays with Laphroaig. Charcoal and sea spray. Finish: moderately long, with a strong oak profile, the peat comes out later in the finish with its phenols
