About this bottle

In order to be classified as VSOP, the youngest component in a blend must be aged for 4 years in oak. The House of Meukow blends together various vintages from the six cognac regions, using casks aged a year older than required to create their VSOP. Presented in a glass decanter designed with the brand's iconic panther, Meukow VSOP Superior Cognac is bottled at 40% ABV.

Review #44 - Brandy / Cognac #6 Bought in Budapest Airport in a 50ml bottle, on offer with the Glenfiddich VAT 01 50ml for 7 euros the pair, which seems like a very good deal for trying out a cognac. It has an orange-amber colour, being quite oily in the glass. Nose - not the smoothest nose, quite a bit of alcohol and spice, oaky woodiness, orange marmelade, vanilla, sweet, fruity. Palate - There is a notable burn from the alcohol which is a bit surprising for a VSOP, yet there is not much of the spice which is a characteristic for younger cognacs (mellow on the palate). There is also a lot of fruitiness, sweetness, the same orange marmelade from the nose, similar to a brandy like Metaxa 12*, with some honey, and grape and plum aroma as well besides the oak. Finish - Short-medium, chocolate, that then turns intro a cocoa woody dryness towards the aftertaste. There is still some fruity sweetness, and a slight bitterness as well. It is a decent cognac, especially given the lower price. Not the smoothest, not the highest quality, but decent, fruity and quite enjoyable. Grolar Bear 5.0

I believe this VSOP Cognac is stellar at this specific price point, beats all the competition. Smoother than Remi Martin, Courvoisier and definitely Hennessy VSOP and much tastier in my opinion. You would need to get very close to XO territory with the aforementioned brands before getting smoother than this Meukow VSOP Red bottle Superior Cognac.

Fionas 4.0

This is an excellent, affordable, smooth cognac with a wonderful boost of flavor on the opening and then gliding to a soft landing at the finish. Lovely from start to finish. I expect to order many bottles in future years.

Looneyhead 3.8

Heavy grape must and sweet fruit, wood and a hint of caramel. Moderately sweet, toasty, woody taste. Dry and slightly spicy. Medium hot.

A solid 3.5 but since I can't give half ratings, I'll give it a 4. For the price point, there are better VSOPs. $84.95 in Ontario.

I don’t know much about cognacs but this was easy to taste. Quite sweet and soft. The taste of alcohol was quite hidden.
