This is an unusual mezcal. I find that most mezcals have this earthy smoky flavor as the backbone, and top notes of mineral clay followed by whatever flavor the unique variety of agave provides. And unlike whiskey, I also find there's really no way to hide bitter or not-so-well developed flavors by secondary finishing; there's only two ingredients---agave and water. And plenty of sun for natural fermentation. In this case, I was thrown off...because I didn't get the clay or earthy flavors. I got a sweetness, almost an artificial type of saccharin sweetness. It's not bad...just not for me. It's like opening a bottle of Ardbeg and you suddenly get a Balvenie heather and honey.
About this bottle
The brand, which translates to "you will love," was founded by Jorge Rodríguez-Cano and Santiago Suárez Cordova. It's a collaboration between 5 mezcaleros in the village of San Juan del Río in Oaxaca. It's made from 100% Espadín grown in the surrounding hills near the distillery that is roasted for 5 days in conical ovens over Holm Oak logs. It's made the traditional way with horse-drawn mills for grinding, open pine containers for fermenting and copper pot distilling. Both the agave and the logs used to roast it are used sustainably, with a number of replanting for every one taken.

A light, floral agave scent greets the nose. Notes of campfire are subdued and tantalizing. Upon first sip, the creosote is more apparent, but still quite mild and approachable. The overall agave flavor is quite rich and flavorful, with dry, yet lush vegetal notes. The body is medium, while the finish is medium-long. This is a very nice sipping mezcal that will work wonderfully in cocktails as well.
Tried neat and over a rock in Mexico City. Very smooth but very mild on the smoke and the more smoke the better for me
A gift from my friend Gerardo hand carried from Mexico and recommended to him by his cousin
Light smoked wood aroma with a hint of citrus. Warm, earthy, woody, lightly smoky taste.
Balanced. Good smoke. Great on the rocks or in a mixed drink (like a smoky margarita).
