Appearance: Beige, like caramel flavoured milk. Aroma: Similar to Baileys Irish Cream, but milder and with no whiskey presence, just a neutral alcohol note. Flavour & Texture: Very little coffee character – in fact almost none at all. The primary flavours are caramel and vanilla with a faint suggestion of chocolate. The texture is good, being creamy but not thick or cloying. This liqueur is made at Helfta Cistercian monastery in Eisleben which was founded in the 13th century and was active until 1545. Then in 1999, after four centuries of secular use, the property was restored and is now again home to Cistercian nuns. As well as this liqueur the monastery produces dry and barrel-aged gin. If you like moderately sweet creamy liqueurs you will like this but if you want a full-bodied liqueur that really tastes like coffee (e.g. Mr Black etc.) then give it a miss. It is pleasant and easy to enjoy, but the coffee character is so lacking it can barely be called coffee liqueur and overall it's just too generic to rate a recommendation. “Adequate” : 74/100 (2.25 stars)
