The nose starts with charred oak and marshmallow, before giving way to brown sugar, vanilla and a touch of rye spice. The toasted finish really goes a long way to calm the spiciness that is usually found in a 5-year-old bourbon from MGP. It quickly gets sweeter and smoother as it breathes, giving way to hence of ripe fruit. The palate gently fills the mouth as you swirl it around, before giving way to a burst of baking spices, charred oak and toasted marshmallow. It is wonderfully simple as the best thing about it is the toasted spiciness that you get. It is indeed rather simple, but what offers you is so full and rich, that it does not need more going on with it. Toasted finishes are to show off exactly that - what toasted barrels can do for whiskey. And amalgamates all that a whiskey has to offer and wraps it up in a nice toasty bow. The finish is medium with the lingering toasted spice that gently, and sadly, too quickly fades that has one area that really holds this whiskey back is how quickly the finish is over and done with. Otherwise it's spectacular.
