The nose is surprisingly gentle, offering up a mix of charred oak and ripe fruit. That gives way to smoke and leather, presenting a very full bodied nose. Hints of vanilla and brown sugar round it out, finish an experience you want to keep visiting. The palate is mostly dry and lays in wait before filling the mouth with strong pepper and cherry syrup. It is almost astringent as charred oak rides the wave of flavor. Sweeter notes of vanilla are faint in the background, in the corners of the mouth to round things out. It is very straight, simple and to the point, which is the calling card of barrel strength Old Forester. The finish is long and slightly chewy, with a lingering pepperiness and cherry syrup keeping the mouth buzzing until the next sip. This is a great instance of barrel strength doing wonders for a whiskey.
