Tasting on large rock. This whiskey has a crisp, spicy, woody aroma reminiscent of black or even chili pepper with a whiff of pithy orange like Aperol. It has a very pungent, acerbic tongue-tingling taste reminiscent of peppercorns steeped in vanilla. Straining the imagination reveals a hint of orange pith or maybe unripe pear. I am surprised by professional reviews that picked out dozens of flavors. To me, the vanilla flavor is unshakably overpowering, and while its spicy assertiveness may be preferable in a cocktail, I think it isn't the best for sipping straight.

Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey has a sour cherry Cabernet Sauvignon wine aroma with charred new oak background. The entry is tart and sour with a dry Cabernet Sauvignon taste. The finish is rye and tart cherry.Great for dry Matthatten, old fashions, and whiskey sours
Old Overholt 4 Year is clear and copper. The aroma is of minty grain. The flavor is of that element, with some bread crust. The body is low medium, and it finishes short-medium. RJT
After my first taste, I immediately added this bottle to my buy list, fully expecting it to be around $100 a bottle. Was very surprised when I learned the cost.
