Nose: Sweet, and loaded with effervescent fruits - pear, raspberry, blueberry, lightly floral. Really bright on the nose for something that is supposedly this old. Taste: Thin mouth feel but no heat. Apples, candied fruit and nuts. Bright and spirit-y. Faint pipe tobacco, little caramel. Not wildly complex. Finish: Long, lots of molasses, brown sugar, toffee and sweet cream. Almost a root beer note. Really interesting how this transforms. Overall: This is sorta bizarre - and if it weren’t for the finish it would be easy to write off. Still, though, the nose and palate are light, not particularly complex and interesting then the finish swoops in to add a bit more. That said, I can’t think of why I would reach for this over so many other things that are currently available. Thanks for reading! Rank: 5
About this bottle
Maison Paul Beau has been distilling cognac under the family name consistently since 1977, but off and on prior to that since 1895 when they also produced for other houses. Their Hors d'Âge is produced from the ugni blanc grape produced on their estate in Segonzac in Grande Champagne. Their Master Distiller, Olivier Laurichesse, produces their cognacs without additives. The wines are filtered from their lees (the dead yeast cells left after fermentation) for a clean style.

Nose of wood, vanilla, nuts, grapes, plum, toffee, rancio. Lightly sweet on the palate; caramel, toffee, wood, rancio, plum.
Won’t blow your socks off, but it’s super smooth with a thick, oily mouthfeel and notes of almonds and citrus.
