This is a distillery only release, single barrel, cask strength rye. Sampled at Peerless on 10/11, and then re-tasted on 10/21 from bottle purchased at the distillery. Nose- loads of cherry pie filling, oak, powdered sugar, with a touch of spearmint. Palate- Tasting notes are exactly like its namesake! This tastes just like a boozey cherry bearclaw. The mouthfeel is viscous but not oily. Chewy and sweet oozing with tart cherry pie filling, covered in warm pastry dough. This tastes right out of the oven delicious with a dusting of carmelized sugar on the back end. Finish- the finish is a warm pastry dough, with a touch of cherry cough drop. It is warming, and lingering, but not biting Overall- Hands down one of the best rye whiskey single barrels I have had to date. Tremendously balanced. It is sweet and dessert-like, but not over the top sugary. Drinks nowhere near its 111.5 proof, and is a bottle that will catch up on you from out of nowhere but pleasantly so. Usually the 'tater tags' are only an illusion to what is inside, but with this one I am still trying to figure out how they actually got that boozey cherry bearclaw into the bottle! Really well done.
