About this bottle

Produced by Master Mezcalero Cutberto Santiago in the village of Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca, Pelotón De la Muerte is made from 100% agave espadín cooked in a pit oven covered with volcanic rocks. The juices from the cooked piñas are pressed using a traditional tahona, then fermented in wooden vats before being double-distilled in copper pot stills. Pelotón de la Muerte means “brigade of death” and the label depicts the flag used by insurgents during the Mexican Revolution.

July 11 2022: Purchased a year or so at a private liquor store in Park Royal South, W. Vancouver. A flat mickey cracked just now, an ounce and a half in a whiskey tasting glass. No color, as expected, as it’s un-aged. Herbal on the nose, herbal and briny on the palate, maybe a trace of smoke? Decent, I’d say, for a basic mezcal, but this’s no sipper. I’m infusing it in Mott’s Clamato Original. A very decent mixer, and the tequila/mezcal Caesar is a favorite of mine from way back. Yessir!

You could sip it over ice, mix with OJ or lemonade or blend into a simple marguerita with the juice of a lime or so and dissolved sugar...it's just what a good mescal should be...luxurious cactus sweets with a hint of charcoal lurking underneath. Had it been aged then maybe it would have been a bit more mellow and complex, but for this price you can not beat it

Nose: light smoke, citrus Taste: mild agave sweetness, mild spice, nuttiness Overall a great mezcal especially for those getting into mezcal. Not over powering with the smoke and delicious for cocktails like smoky Paloma or smoky margarita.

Aroma: Banana peel, butterscotch Flavor: Sweet, then spicy, then smokey. Like cayenne on a Werther's Original. Pear-like when taking a mouthful. Both interesting and enjoyable.

Good presentation, I like the bottle a lot - so fancy! The taste - strong, you can feel agave a lot, for me one of the best in this price range to be honest!
