About this bottle

Penderyn is the first distillery in Wales in more than a century, picking up on a whisky-making tradition that dates back to the middle ages. Along with the Legend and Myth, the Celt is part of the brand's "Welsh Dragon" range of 41% ABV expressions (versus their signature 46%). It departs from the distillery's house-style of ex-bourbon cask maturation combined with ex-Madeira wine cask-finishing. This malt is finished in ex-peated Scotch casks instead of ex-Madeira wine casks to add a new dimension to the whisky. The whisky is non-chill filtered and bottled at 41% ABV. Note: This is not currently available in the US.

Nose - Fruity peat smoke dominates, toasted brioche in the background, very clean simple/corn syrup sweet Taste - Very clean initially, then this medicinal, iodine-like smoke appears, similar to an apple juice mixed with campfire ash Finish - Lingering smoke, fruity ash, corn syrup/splenda sweet Score - 50/100 Final Thoughts - I'm not a huge fan of peated whiskies and this is no exception. It's not quite as strong of a medicinal peat as Laphroaig, but it's close. The smoke dominates and any green apple I got from their unpeated expressions is gone, replaced by this splenda-like sweetness. Would I drink it if offered? - No Would I specifically order it? - No Would I buy a bottle? - No

Flaviar advent calendar 2023 #2 Nose: Peat funk, sea salt air, oily. Mild citrus elements, there's definitely a note of marmalade. Vanilla. Palate: light and smooth. Salt. Vanilla, mild smoke and very mild peat. Ginger butter and malt chewiness. Hints of citrus and mild smooth woodiness (like a fresh sweet wood with very light tannins, not charred). Very drinkable. Finish: Thin. Not very long, mild seawater. Mild oak. The nose is definitely bigger and the palate doesn't quite live up to what the nose promises. Not bad by any means. A very light, drinkable malt with a kiss of Laphroaig notes on the nose and lesser so on the palate

Interesting and hard to describe. The smells are faint but you get little whiffs of peat, smoke. The first sip is a juicy mouthful of butter, briny ocean, charcoal, peppercorn. The finish is lengthy but the flavors develop in your mouth. The taste bounces around from medicinal with menthol tingles, then the sweetness kicks in with subtle ripe orange, raisins and tanginess. Love the length but the bitterness can be overpowering. Maybe the mature bottles have the best fit.

Appearance- lightly colored and thin. Nose of pear, lavender and acetone. Sweet and herbal. The taste is of apple pie; baking spaces and fruits are evident. There is not much wood of the barrel except for a slight complexity with a hint of leather and tobacco on the finish. It’s not a particularly complex spirit but it is soft and well-rounded. Honestly, I think it’s rating here is much harsher than its bite.

I tried a triple pack of Penderyn a while back and wasn't that impressed but I was just randomly trying spirits and liqueurs in those days (4 years ago). A year or so later I got into rum then whisky. Penderyn redeemed itself at Dramfest with Rich Oak so I thought I'd have a crack again. First impressions were right. It's almost like sweet spirit, bit of bitterness. Not a lot going on 2.5
