About this bottle

Plymouth Gin is unique in that it is both a gin brand and gin style. A Plymouth-style gin can only be produced in Plymouth, England. The Plymouth Gin brand was first distilled in 1793 at the historic Black Friars Distillery and is (currently) the only gin brand produced in the city. It is made with grain spirit and seven botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seed, orange and lemon peel, green cardamom, angelica root and orris root. After distillation, the gin is then bottled at 41.2% ABV.

Rating: 14/23 N: A little mild and oily. Kind of sweet and herbal. Not a ton happening here. I smell citrus maybe a faint faint peanutty note (weirdly). P: This is mellow and unchallenging. It reminds me of Ford's, but unfortunately with less personality. It's kind of oily, sweet, and mellow. I get some juniper and also a few other flavors, but it's a bit too subtle and muddled for my liking. There's citrus that borders on candied and the alcohol flavor is certainly present (though it's fairly clean). I taste that faint faint peanut too. The smoothness here does sort of have that Aberlour smooth inoffensiveness. I get the feeling that there's solid complexity going on here, but it's all just a bit too subtle for my liking. There's a kind of bitter underlying layer with perhaps a dash of licorice that reminds me a little of Bols Genever (in a good way). Some minerality too. The balance is solid, though I generally prefer my gin to be a touch more dry. F: The alcohol comes out more and the bitter herbal element and minerality kind of linger. - Conclusion - Side-by-side, this is perhaps more mature while Ford's is puchier, livlier, a bit harsher, and more fully realized. This has grown on me though, so I'm placing it closer to Ford's than I'd expected to. I was initially looking at an 11 to 12 for this, but I'm now considering more in the 13 to 15 range. I think that the price and ABV make this a clear loser in comparison with Ford's and other options, but this is solid. I'll enjoy the rest of the bottle. I'm landing on a 14 here. I was in the 14 to 15 range, but since I spent so much time in the sub-14 range, I figured I should go with 14.

Nose: Fresh citrus, more like lemon juice than lemon peel, with juniper, caraway seed and coriander all easily discerned. There is a warm, restrained spice quality to the nose. Palate: Mild peppery juniper, citrus, and warm earthy spices. The texture is outstanding, with an oily quality that makes it smoother and more rounded in character than most gins. The palate is rich and satisfying and has excellent balance. Finish: Medium. Citrus and spice notes with a fruity hint in the aftertaste. Unlike many gins created over the last decade Plymouth does not try to bombard the palate with a barrage of juniper or overload the senses with a bushel of botanicals. The recipe is reputedly simple with just seven ingredients, all of which are distilled in a “one shot” process, as is the case with London Dry gin. In fact, Plymouth is essentially a type of London dry ... just made in Plymouth. "Plymouth Gin" used to be a protected regional designation that could only be used by gin made in Plymouth, England but that is no longer the case. The aroma and flavour are excellently balanced, but its outstanding characteristic is its texture. The mouth-feel is rich, creamy and full which makes the palate seem more intense than it actually is. The result is a gin that is full and satisfying but also delicate and relaxed. Whilst I very much enjoy exploring new gins I sometimes find myself gravitating back to Plymouth and there is often a bottle in the bar. “Very Good” : 85/100 (4 stars)

I was curious to try this legendary gin, so I took a couple of sips. It's much sweeter than I'd expected and it's also fruitier. There's not a ton of juniper, but there is a surprisingly large prickly, spicy element. There's some clear minerality as well. I'd like to try this side-by-side with Ford's, which seems like the closest parallel I can think of. This isn't terribly strongly flavored and the flavors smoosh together a bit (but I've just been making some strongly flavored soup, so my palate could be way off). I like this, but I'll need to give it a proper tasting to make a call on whether I really like this. Well, at least if I like it enough to say it's worth the price. Based on this tasting, I give it a thumbs up, though not the most enthusiastic one.

I had a chance to try this wonderful London Dry Gin and it was just what I like in Gin. It is smooth and easy drinking as well as no black pepper finish. It has a mild juniper and citrus nose and it is not harsh sipping neat. The finish is soft with a little citrus but is very nice. It makes a great Gin and Tonic even with cheap tonic water and with good tonic water it is out of this world. If you make a Gimlet like the one above it is also wonderful. I am looking forward to trying this in a Martini as well. I have nothing bad to say about this gin. I am also looking forward to trying the navy strength version of this. I found this at less than $20 and at that price it is an absolute steal and if you are a gin drinker you really should try this.

A crisp Plymouth Gin (a style & a brand) by Black Friars Distillery crafted with grain spirit & 7 botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seed, orange & lemon peel, green cardamom, angelica root & orris root. After distillation, the gin is then bottled at 41.2% ABV. It has an aromatic birth with notes of grain, berries, earth, seeds, herbs & spices; while a crisp & full life adds notes of mint, citrus & juniper; that led to a long & balanced death with notes of coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, angelica root & orris root.

Great gin, excellent history. This a a gin that was meant to drink on a ship at sea with men who had to ship next to each other months on end(without washing). It was to take away the salt taste in their mouth. It therefore is very strong and punchy flavours of coriander, mint and citrus
