About this bottle

A Minnesota operation, Prairie spirits buys corn from local farmers to use as the base in all of their spirits. The corn is grown organically and the farmers employ traditional methods to take care of invasive weeds such as controlled brush fires as opposed to modern pesticides. The leftover grains are used as animal feed for neighboring livestock. The gin is a proprietary infusion of herbs and botanicals.

Tasting from a 50ml sample. No knowledge of this prior, just can never turn down 50ml samples of new things. The scent has quite a sweetness to it, that reminds me of pure corn whiskey new make, and likely has to do with the organic corn choice of the base spirit here. There's also some lighter vegetal notes, like cucumber and other green skinned veggies. The juniper smells like a good amount in there, enough to where the black pepper notes are even prominent, but it is being overshadowed by the sweet/base spirit. The first sip showcases a light body, and the sweetness is first up, but not nearly as much as found in the scent. The same light vegetal notes come back, and almost matches the veggies you'd find in grandma's backyard during the summer. The juniper comes in last, and finishes things off with a surprising spice kick, that lingers much longer than I would have expected it to. There's a characteristic here that feels like this gin is too sweet, and almost syrupy. It doesn't taste like that, but does feel like it a bit. It's got the body of a cheaper spirit, but the taste of a higher quality one at the same time. I've never seen a full size bottle of this anywhere (although I may have simply never been looking for it), but this seems like the perfect gin to strictly have around for G&Ts, where it would blend perfectly with the mixer and just let the flavor come through. So long as the price is good, I would recommend this with a bar spout on top, and just go to town.

It has a kind of floral bit still piney smell with some other herbs and a bit of spice - quite like potpourri. There's some alcohol on the nose, but not too much. It's also a tad fruity. It's a fascinating and quite pleasant nose. The palate, sadly comes straight out with water and bitterness. I do get the potpourri flavors and they are quite good, but there's this bitter flavor like charred oak with some sulfur really getting in the way. As much as I enjoy that potpourri personality on the nose (and also the palate to the extent that I can taste it), the flaws are overwhelming. It's fairly harsh too as it nears the end. The burn isn't the most excessive, but it doesn't have a nice pepper flavor going with it. It does at least taste roughly like gin though.

Pretty sweet and piney the first sip felt like it only hit the tip of my tongue with sharpness, but after that it tasted pretty light, sweet, and smooth. Not very much complexity, but not bad for a 19 dollar bottle and a nice organic operation.

sweet, grain forward, with minimal notes of juniper and herbs especially once water has been added. Improved with mix, although vodka would do just as well in its place. Pass if Gin is required or desired.

Rating: 8/23 Fairly sweet, a bit harsh, somewhat peppery, a bit floral, some clean water, some alcohol, a bit of rubber. I think I was a little harsh before with my rating, but not too harsh.

Good drink overall. Mellow, with light flavor, but nothing too special. However it is cheap and nothing to ignore if youre on a budget
