About this bottle

Pyrat was originally conceived in 1997 by the Anguilla Rum Company and has since been acquired by Patrón Spirits. It is a blend of rums sourced from throughout the Caribbean, though the majority of its makeup consists of a Demerara style from Guyana. The rums are aged in a combination of American (ex-bourbon) and French Limousin oak, for as little as 2 years and as much as 15. The shape of the bottle is a throwback to the style of decanters favored by sea captains and pirates. The medallion around its neck is said to symbolize Hoti, the Patron Saint of Bartenders, despite the bottle’s somewhat unwieldy shape.

I'm not sure why I picked this up. The bottle is cool looking but I haven't read that many glowing reviews. I'm guessing I planned to use this in cocktails. Either way, this is a very one note rum. The nose has oak and orange peel. The first sip is even more orange and very sweet. The orange notes are overwhelming. The finish continues the assault with burnt orange peel and some heat. It may just be me, but the orange flavoring is just too much. I'm not sure what they were going for here but it seems like they should have called this an orange rum or something. I think with the right ingredients it can probably make a decent cocktail but neat it's just not good.

For some, this rum might be a tad too cloyingly sweet and a little heavy on the chocolate-orange notes. For me, I’ve been serving it up in a warm glass here and there this winter and it’s actually been quite nice. It’s not your average rum, and that might be good or bad depending on what you want out of a drink. Mixing with coke saves me the effort of adding any curaçao or anything because it’s got that citrus sweetness already. Hey, maybe it’s just meant to be a wintertime drink.

A rich Rum from Guyana aged as much as fifteen years in American oak & French Limousin barrels. It opens with notes of citrus, orange peel, vanilla Icing sugar, cola, cinnamon, brown sugar, honey & fruit; a body of orange marmalade, tangerine, lemon & hints of waxy vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon & pepper; while closing with notes of molasses, cola, orange peels marmalade & spice. Nose: brown sugar, oranges, molasses various sweet citrus and ethanol. Palate: kind of funky starts out with ethanol and a bitter funk I can't quite place continuing to sweet orange, more molasses and brown sugar Finish: molasses, citrus, peppery ethanol with an almost aspertame taste that lingers for longer than it's welcome. Could work in tiki cocktails with the citrus however this is not a rum to sip.

This is the rum, I love the simplicity of this one, every vanilla and caramel note are very dedicated, nothing too sweet, with hints of spices. This is the rum that just sits perfectly on your palate, neat is very easy to drink, one of those products that by the aroma you are able to identify it straight away. The medallion is a plus, you can find a Pyrat necklace in many bartenders.

On the nose, tangerines, sweet Naval orange, and candied marmalade intermingle with brown sugar, Demerrara sugar and vanilla. On the palate the sugars are immediate with the citrus notes also present. An unexpected blueberry note also hits home. A very sweet rum. Overall: Nose 3.5/5 Palate: 3.5/5 Score 3.5/5 Repurchase: Yes Type: Friday Night Pour
