About this bottle

This is the second cask strength release for Redwood Empire's Lost Monarch whiskey. Lost Monarch is the brand's "ryebon" offering — a blend of straight rye and straight bourbon whiskeys. The rye whiskeys have a recipe of 94% rye, 5% malted barley, 1% wheat and the bourbon is 74% corn, 20% rye, 4.5% malted barley, 1.5% wheat. The whiskeys featured here were aged in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels for a minimum of three years and up to 14 years. Since they were aged in the California fog belt, the cask strength proof of 117.2 is lower than many other such offerings of similar makeup. Cask Strength Lost Monarch is available at select retailers nationwide beginning May 2023. (SRP $70)

The nose is cinnamon, wisps of biscuit dough, and just a touch of dankness. On the palate, though, everything is bright, creamy, and spicy, with a lovely vanilla note that carries through and a very nice mouthfeel to boot. Imagine a highly alcoholic spice cake with cream cheese frosting that’s been liquified and you’re in the ball park.

Nose: musty, green apple, char/toast, think of outside rain smell Pallet: very mineral - reminds me of Dickel, rye, pepper, herbal Its just okay. Would prefer the standard release for half the peice. Not a fan of that mineral taste. The green apple is the best part of this whiskey. Give me the Sagamore Cask Strength for $55 instead.

The nose is a bit muted, apple, rye, toasted caramel, musty barrel, corn. Relatively smooth on the palate but quite spicy, with lots of rye, apple, cinnamon, barrel char, mint and other herbs, pepper, burnt caramel. Spicy finish, charred and lightly fruity, rye, a hint of black cherry at the back.

Nose comes across as baking spice and carmel with some hot ethanol notes. Also a light musty aged note in present. Flavor is an interesting blend of mineral caramel finishing drier than expected. Definitely different being a blend but enjoy the finish left behind on the tongue.

First couple pours I did not like this at all but tevisiting it became much more balances with a bitter pine note but lots of sweetness to back it up. A decent bottle but will select a different Redwood Empire bottle next time.
