Bourbon Snob Tries Gin: Part 8 Part 7: The Botanist Part 9, 1/9/25: Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin >>>~~~~~~~~~~<<< I have not had too many gins. It’s been years since I’ve tried one. I don’t really know the language or the flavor profiles that make sense when describing gin. But hey: we’re halfway there. Some might say: we’re living on a prayer. This is a bourbon snob trying to understand gin. Much thanks to @ContemplativeFox for the pour! >>>~~~~~~~~~~<<< Nose is lemon, vanilla, cream, bit of pine. Body is tangerine, lemon, orange peel, more vanilla. Finish is orange peel, bit more vanilla. This is another really good gin. I think the key for me with these is staying away from overly sweet or overly floral. This one does a great job in the fruity/briny space, and almost scratches the same itch as a really good juicy rye.
About this bottle
Roku Gin is the first gin released by Suntory. Its name, “Roku,” meaning “six” in Japanese, refers to the six Japanese botanicals used in its creation: sakura flower and leaf, sencha tea, gyokuro tea, sanshō pepper, and yuzu. These are combined with eight traditional gin botanicals and distilled using a variety of pot stills selected for each ingredient. The bottle’s label is printed on Japanese washi paper, highlighting its roots. Originally launched in Japan in July 2017, Roku Gin became available in the US in October 2018.

Cumple, es una marca con potencial y con la tardición destilera de los japoneses se pueden venir buenas versiones. Rico enebro y predomina un verdor característico de los tés japoneses, con amargor leve, pero lo que más destaca es la pimienta. Correctamente ensamblado. It complies, it is a brand with potential and with the Japanese distilling tradition, good versions can come. Rich juniper and a characteristic greenness of Japanese teas predominates, with slight bitterness, but what stands out most is the pepper. Properly assembled.
Fresh, tart citrus predominantly, joined by a presence of spices, more well rounded in taste than in the nose presumably thanks to the tea. Tonic mutes the spices somewhat besides a little pepper. Slight bitterness and slightly odd spice off-taste that comes and goes and deserves mentioning but doesn't impact the overall experience significantly. Priced regularly but have gotten it as cheap as 20 EUR per Bottle before.
85 N: hodně citrusy, květiny, výrazné chutě 21 T: citrusy, jemně štiplavost alkoholu, pepř, intenzivní, jemně alkohol 21 F: dlouhý, hřejivý a lehce alkoholový. Pepř v dozvuku, bylinnost 22 B: hodně intenzivní, hřejivě alkoholový, chuťově moc fajn, jen z toho trochu leze alkohol, lepší do GT než samotný, pak je až moc intenzivní 21
Featuring 6 botanicals native to Japan, with heavy notes of yuzu and sakura blossoms, this is definitely a modern gin. Highly recommend preparing your gin and tonic with slices of ginger, as recommended on the Suntory website. Beautiful bottle with each of the six botanicals represented on separate sides. Definite re-purchase.
Nose: Lime, white pepper, sand/saline Palate: mushroom, pepper, vegetal, olive Finish: spicy, vegetal, grassy, orange peel, bitter Great gin for any cocktail especially a dirty martini. Wonderfully complex without being overpowering.
