About this bottle

Tamnavulin Double Cask was the first release from the distillery in this century. Much of its production finds its way into blends, but now Tamnavulin finally has its own expression. The single malt whisky is first matured in American oak barrels before a finishing period in sherry casks.

I am not sure if this is my first Tamnavulin, but what i am truly sure is that i haven't had the chance to proper analyze this distillery that belongs to "Emperador.Inc" which are the nowadays owners of Whyte & Mackay, a company that in whisky has one great brand: Dalmore. The other ones tend to be not to appealing to the general public. This is the review for the Double Cask, their first official bottling after some decades. Finished in sherry casks. Bottled at 40%abv. On the nose,  lots of fruits and sweets. Citric, chocolate. Grapefruit, gooseberries and other fresh farm fruits. The toffee note here is out of this world. On the palate, it is a little simple. Lots of toffee, gooseberries and an acid feeling like a lemon peel. Aftertaste was dull. Sawdust, standard oakiness and bitter new wood. Overall, for a cheap single malt, which comes from a very sub-par distillery, this was not as bad as i could have guessed by only looking at the bottle, which is not my cup of tea. Enjoyable dram with a dissapointing, young finish. My score for it is 79 over 100.

Nose: fleeting, light hint of lemon and pear. Palate: always lemon and pears, a very light hint of sherry, always all elusive. Final: short and slightly bitter. An inconsistent whisky, not bad, but that doesn't give any emotion. Voto 3,5

A rich, Single Malt Scotch Whisky by the Tamnavulin Distillery in Speyside, Scotland initially matured in American oak barrels & then finished in ex-Sherry casks. It has a rich birth with notes of chocolate mousse with brown sugar, apples & blackberries; while a rich & spicy life adds notes of Christmas morning with pudding, chocolate brownies, toffee, & a hint of barley; that leads to a long & warming death. Aroma is crisp, red apple. Flavors: The sweetness of red apple is present, along with a spritzing of orange peel that gives it some of that spicy zing. It has a watery mouth-feel. In the beginning of drinking it, it has an alcohol burn/vapor at the end, but close to the end of the glass -- and having another round -- that goes away. Decent price for a decent scotch, thus my slightly elevated rating. Rating based on neat sipping.

Second tasting of the evening. 4/5 bottle. Very discreet and not deep taste, in a bad sense. Sharp alcohol taste and alcohol burning in the mouth. A very bit of wood cask in the finish. The smell a lot of alcohol. The nose burns and tickles. Between 2.25 and 2.5 stars.
