About this bottle
The Glenlivet Captain's Reserve is a no-age statement release which first aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The whisky then finished its maturation for at least six months in French Limousin oak casks which previously held cognac. The name honors Captain William Smith Grant, the great-grandson of the founder of The Glenlivet, who served France during WWI. Available first at the distillery and global travel retail beginning in May 2018 with a global release to follow in the summer months.

Picked this up with Glenlivet’s Founder reserve on a special deal. First time buying, and most likely the last. The nose, as I find most Glenlivets note appealing, this was similar though not as strong or pleasing. Leather, a bit of a citrus note and some honey. The palate: basic and one dimensional. Hits the mouth with leather and fruit, but very watered down. The finish is short with zero lasting taste. It’s not smooth, it’s not strong, it lacks dimension - but it is Scotch. Given the price, and that the Nose does resemble Glenlivet, I leave this at a 1.
This is a great scotch, I always felt the 15 was missing something and a little boring. The captains reserve has that missing element. It is just as smooth but the flavour is more pronounced and that cognac finish rounds it out. Both regularly around $70CAD but can be had on sale for $20 less, I will always pick the captain going forward.
The Captains reserve has a very sweet forward profile which I really love, it is probably my favourite profile to have on a scotch. The ex-sherry cask gives it that sweetness that you want with some great notes of honey, vanilla, marshmallow, fruits, but is balanced with a spice from the the ex-bourbon cask as well.
Definite nose of apricot jam. Very sweet and welcoming. Deep, intense and flourishing palate! A small hint of apples, an honest confirmation of apricot jam with an interesting spice. Shares the soft spot of a delicious cinnamon bread. Mildly strong but smooth finish that leaves thirsty for more.
