It’s December 13, and I’m going to try a new rye whiskey every day this month. And while my rye game is not as weak as my Scotch game was this time last year, I’m always up for suggestions on good rye whiskies. And now that I have goals (it’s good to have goals), there are some key players I could use your help finding. Send me your most intense contender. Goals (abridged): 5 ryes. 4.5 stars. Readily available. (3/5, WT101, Whistlepig 10, Whistlepig 12) I want to recognize the difference between any bourbon and any rye. First try. One of these must be an Empire Rye. I want a raunchy rye. I want the one that tastes like your least favorite coworker announcing in front of everyone that their getting you a Christmas present. And it’s expensive. >>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whistlepig 12 Year Old World Rye Bespoke Blend
About this bottle
Whistlepig offers retailers, bars, and other groups the opportunity to sell their own bottling of the brand's Old World Rye blend. It's a blend of three parcels of 12 year-old rye whisky (distilled in Canada). Each parcel is finished in Madeira, Sauternes, or Port casks. The ratio of these finishing barrels will be selected by the seller, hence the Bespoke Blend name. These percentages will be listed on the label along with the seller's name.

Nose: Some oak and apple with minimal heat on the nose. Some sweetness that is tough to place, maybe honey. Palate: Rye hits with some black pepper and medium heat. Finish: some of that peppery burn rolls through followed by some fruit and then a long chocolate finish. Very nice finish Overall this is a solid rye with a very good finish. Finish lasted quite awhile and really put a stamp on its rating. Very good
Store pick in VT, 60% Madeira, 20% Sauternes, 20% Port. The palate is not as sweet as expected from the nose, but in a good way, as the sweet barrel finish notes combine nicely with the rye spice. The finish is long and warm for the proof as well. There’s nothing wrong with this bottle, it’s just that I enjoy the 10 year about as much for a fair bit less money.
Nose - Floral Herb notes. Minor smoky motes. Palate - Oaky for a rye. Floral honey notes. Smoky bbq notes. Cinnamon. Finish - Medium finish with a smoky cinnamon. Dark cocoa bites.
Nose is baking spice, oak, and a little cedar and blackberry; rye spice, oak, walnut; medium finish with rye spice and some pastry; smooth, not very sweet; medium texture
Soft and smooth with a strong finish. This is, to my adolescent tongue, complicated. Many faint tastes in the background but the finish is goood!
