After the solid Farmstock Crop 003, I’ve been looking forward to its predecessor. I’ll give the breakdown for this like I did the last one: 32% 2 year-old Vermont Rye; 45% Indiana 6-year old Indiana Rye; 10-year old Canadian Rye. Nose: Rye spice and baking soda. Gala apple. Dill. Caramel and vanilla. Pistachio, peppermint, and maybe just a hint of mint chocolate. Woody, nutty notes. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and oak. Solid nose. Palate: Caramel and Gala apple. Black pepper and rye spice. More of the woody, nutty notes. Pistachio, toasted almond, and walnut. A touch of cola. Clove, nutmeg, and oak. Finish: Pistachio Baking soda. Dill, rye spice, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and oak. Short-moderate finish. The nose was solid. The palate and finish didn’t quite hit the mark. A little disappointed in this one compared to Crop 003. It’s a not bad whiskey. Perfectly drinkable, and very pleasant. But it does nothing to stoke the imagination, and a $60 price tag drops the score a quarter star. 3/5.
About this bottle
Available beginning May 2018, Crop No. 002 is the second release in the FarmStock estate release. Each year, it will include a growing percentage of their own "Triple Terroir™ whiskey" utilizing rye grain, water, and oak locally sourced from their grain-to-glass Vermont farm distillery. For Crop No. 002, that straight rye whiskey comprises 32% of the blend up from 20% in the first batch. The remainder includes a 6 year-old rye distilled in Indiana (MGP) which is 45% of the blend and a 10 year-old rye distilled in Canada (Alberta Distillers) which is 23% of the blend. The three whiskeys in the blend are clearly presented on the back of the bottle in the spirit of transparency. Bottled at 43% ABV.

The nose is soft with floral rye spiciness with notes of buttery vanilla and oak, while the younger aspect of the blend presents some raw herbal notes. The palate is very subtle and opens up with oak and vanilla with the rye trailing behind it, with the youth again showing itself coming in at the end with a sharp earth spiciness. The finish is medium with a lingering floral rye spiciness with a raw spiciness sticking to the mouth. Overall it’s too subtle in all aspects and the blend of aged and young whiskey seems to be at a bit of a conflict.
Significantly better than the 003 expression that came out the following year. The notes on the palate were distinctly different from each other, but worked in tandem… young yet tame rye (perhaps a fairly narrow cut?), green grass, and white florals (more used to that in Scotland/Ireland than in the U.S.). There was a slight cayenne/chili powder sensation (not taste) at the front end of the finish.
Unlike some others reviewers I really and truly enjoyed this one. It was different than many other rye whiskeys and was one of the most crisp and refreshing I have had to date. It is nice to have at least one whiskey that is light on the palate. N- sweet, citrus, vanilla, young P- rye spice, apple, pepper F- short, clean, crisp (like white wine)
Color more red compared to 001. Nose: sweet, bubblegum, vanilla Taste: sweeter and smoother than 001, initially didn't get the herbal times until I let it sit in my mouth and run of the sides of the tongue. Similar finish in that it lasts and makes me salivate.
Moderately sweet with plenty of rye spice that one could easily confuse with ABV but it does mellow out a bit after letting rest. Overall a good pour but their 10 year rye blows this one out of the water any day of the week.
