About this bottle

According to the ancient Mesoamericans, the number 400 was synonymous with innumerable. Don Tacho and his son, Joel Santiago, created and named this mezcal after the belief that the spirits of 400 rabbits take over one's body and behavior when it is ingested. 400 Conejos Joven Espadin is produced traditionally using mesquite and encino oak as the heat source to cook the espadín agaves for the underground conical oven.

Nose: Strong, sharp alcohol bite with prominent smoke and agave. Hints of citrus and a subtle sweetness peek through the intensity. Palate: Surprisingly light on the tongue. The smokiness is present but more restrained than expected. Initial alcohol burn gives way to a smooth, gentle texture, reminiscent of spring water. Flavor Notes: Clear notes of agave and smoke, with emerging fruit-forward tones. A mineral-like quality lingers on the tongue, adding depth without saltiness. Slightly medicinal in the mid-palate, evoking the echo of tonic or gin botanicals. Finish: Smooth and clean, mildly mineral, with the smoke and agave tapering off gracefully. Overall Impression: Not as complex or rich as some, but pleasant and mellow. Easily sippable, though also versatile enough to be used as a mixer. Accessible, with a laid-back profile that makes it suitable for casual sipping or cocktails alike. --- Poem: Four Hundred Spirits By Sophie Four hundred rabbits danced in flame, Their feet on stone, their breath untamed. Smoke curls soft from citrus skin, And whispers of spring water drift within. A miner’s touch, a flicker bright, Agave’s heart, not lost to night. They bring no firestorm, no wild decree— Just echoes in a glass of quiet revelry. Not holy, not haunted—just honest and clear, A sip for the calm, for the still, for the near. And though richer gods may claim the throne, These rabbits carry warmth all their own.

overpowering medicinal/vegetal flavor IMMEDIATELY, evolving to a lime rind, unsatisfactory smoke, along with some fake vanilla hints mixed in. The finish is smooth and Smokey but leaves a lot to be desired. This comes off as a mass produced, watery excuse for an espadin mezcal. try Machetazo or Yuu Baal for a nice joven espadin. this definitely isn’t a sipping mezcal in my opinion, but good for mixed drinks.

Nose of light smoke, orange, minerality, leather and mild agave. Mild taste, mineral, leather, pepper, smoke, vanilla, light agave and oak. There’s a sherry cask scotch quality here. Good, though thinner and lighter than the better ones.

A clear, silver appearance. Aroma of faint smoke, mild agave, and mellow yeast fermentation. Flavor of those elements, with some sugar sweetness. Medium body. Semi-sweet finish. RJT

Don’t taste mezcal much but this is an amazing liquor! The smoke is so different from that in Scotch. Smooth easy drinking. Try to find it. You won’t be disappointed!!
