The aguardente of sugarcane known as Azuladinha is a registered trademark of the city of Paraty in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and has been produced for over 150 years. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, changes in Brazilian legislation have prohibited its registration and decreed the end of a tradition. Azuladinha, also known as Laranjinha Celeste, is a blue-colored aguardiente of sugarcane and the oldest on record. The drink has its blue hue naturally when distilled with the addition of a “pillow” made of tangerine leaves inside the still. Currently, the Laranjinha Celeste brand is used by Cachaça Maria Izabel, produced on the Santo Antônio farm in Paraty. However, other producers make this aguardiente and, in order to obtain registration and sell it, were forced to replace the tangerine leaves with an extract containing the same substance, which ended up removing the blue color from the drink. The Coqueiro brand uses this extract and its aguardiente does not have the blue color. If you want to drink or buy the original with the blue color, you have to go to Paraty and look for another producer. Sensory notes: bright and clear, aromatic, citrus notes, sugarcane sweetness, vegetal and herbal, pleasant freshness, alcohol present but well integrated, persistent finish.
