About this bottle

The former George T. Stagg Distillery was renamed Buffalo Trace when Sazerac took over ownership in 1999. Master Distiller Elmer T. Lee came out of retirement for the creation of Buffalo Trace Bourbon which was released later that same year. This is the flagship bourbon from the distillery and is comprised of a low-rye traditional mash bill. It is bottled without an age statement at 90 proof.

Hey there, you gloriously unrefined, whiskey-loving weirdos! 👋 So picture this: I’m all set up for a classy, refined, dare I say influencer-level review of Woodford Reserve. The lighting? Chef’s kiss. The camera angle? Movie magic. The phone battery? Oh, it DIED faster than my New Year’s resolutions. 💀📱 While my phone recharged (along with my will to live), I figured — what better way to kill time than to drag my amazing friends, Chris and Gina Fox, the dynamic duo behind the nearly-world-famous podcast “The Riveted” (it’s like NPR for Airstream nerds, but way sexier), into a bourbon flight of fancy? And joining us on this magical booze cruise: the most electrifying woman in distilled entertainment — my smoking hot cougar, Nicole — who somehow lets me be her legally bound life accessory. 🔥💍 Here’s the line-up for this epic sip safari: 1. Buffalo Trace – The gateway bourbon. Reliable. Dependable. Like that friend who always brings ice but never drama. 2. Castle & Key Wheated Small Batch – A smooth criminal with historic charm and a wheaty grin. 3. Maker’s Mark Private Selection – Hand-picked and full of personality. Like if bourbon wore a tuxedo but with no pants. 4. Larceny Barrel Proof – This one hits like a drunken linebacker in a velvet robe. Wheated, wild, and wonderful. 5. Penelope Rio – Dessert in a glass. Like crème brûlée and a piña colada had a baby raised by bourbon monks. And yes, full reviews of the Maker’s and Penelope are already up — because, unlike my phone, those takes survived. 🙌 So pour one out (and then pour it back in), because shenanigans are guaranteed, and someone’s definitely leaving here with a new favorite… or at least a blurry memory of one. And now… lights, camera, bourbon — ACTION! 🎥🥃 Full Video Review: 🎬 https://youtu.be/zqTnc6EnUBA YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/@belmontbjornsbourbonbanter?si=pxAWYHmesr_WKAcE

Review #28 - Whisk(e)y #19 Colour - Deep golden amber with chestnut hues, oily, with medium legs. ABV - 40% Nose - Prominent, sweet, honey, vanilla, typical bourbon aromas, with an underlying spice, oily smell, and some alcohol as well. It feels a bit heavier than expected on the nose, mainly due to the very prominent honey. Taste - Not as oily as I would expect initially, on the front end being slightly watery, turning creamy and more viscuous on the back end. It is very smooth, with some spice which disappears quickly, but generally sweet, with a lot of honey, vanilla and caramel. After it takes a bit of air, it becomes even more oily, creamy and viscuous. Finish - short-medium in length, sweet, rather creamy actually, with a touch of leathery dryness at the end, the oak influence from the short time it spent in the barrels starting to show up. With a few drops of water, the subtle spiciness is tamed down even more, bringing forth the honey sweetness and surprisingly maintaining the creaminess and viscosity. The finish however, perhaps becomes a bit shorter. Overall it is way better than I expected for 18 euros. I have had some more experience with scotch, so this feels rather one-dimensional, definetly not as good compared to Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select, which is much more complex, but again, Buffalo Trace is a lot cheaper. Very approachable, pleasant, not overly interesting, but enjoyable, punches above its price range across both Irish and Scotch in terms of drinkability. Rating System: 5.0 - Perfect 4.5 - Exceptional 4.0 - Very Good 3.5 - Good 3.0 - Decent 2.5 - Average 2.0 - Below Average 1.5 - Barely Drinkable 1.0 - Undrinkable 0.5 - JB

Most people are familiar with this one. An absolute legend. Buffalo Trace distillery is owned by Sazerac. The Buffalo Trace distillery produces famous whiskey lines like Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, E. H. Taylor, Blanton's, and Weller - among others. Buffalo Trace bourbon the the best whiskey from anywhere in the world for the price. That's a bold statement. I know. 👃 Nothing crazy here. Maybe some traditional dark cherry. Older whiskeys come through smoother on the nose. This one isn't offensive, but it's nothing to write home about either 👄 Caramel, butterscotch, leather, and more. All the classic bourbon flavors to explore in different parts of your mouth. This. Is. Bourbon. 🏁 It's so smooth... More of that dark cherry from the nose. Not particularly high proof, but there isn't a better finish at this price. 👍 If you're new here and wondering. Buy a bottle. You won't regret it. I rate my reviews here with the price tag in mind, but I'm going full 4.75 on this one. 🙏 If you enjoyed reading this review, I've got hundreds of others here on Distiller. Im only getting into bourbon and drinking things neat so its a struggle. However i have been able to get the cinnamon notes on the sides of my tounge. The more i drink it the more im able to understand the taste, granted it’s difficult for me yet to pick out any other notes but its becoming not offensive to drink haha. I dont have a great sense of smell so struggle to get anything there whoxh maybe contributes to not being able to profile it correctly.

There is a reason that Buffalo Trace is one of the best. This is consistently rated very high from people I know that love bourbon. It’s accessible to new bourbon tasters and has those caremel/ vinilla that finishes fruity notes that everyone likes. There is a slight hint of cherry on the pallet that is great neat or in a cocktail. I would say its great but not as interesting as other bourbons I have tried.

Nose has notes of cherry candy, caramel, vanilla and a bit of cinnamon. Palate is light and sweet with a thin mouth feel. Caramel and vanilla are the primary notes I get on the front of the palate. As the palate evolves I get a subtle apple note that gives way to an oakiness that dominates through to the finish. The oaky finish is short overall and provides a little bitterness and dryness.
