Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Rye

We love a great rye, and this is no exception. Boasting 95% rye and 5% malted barley, the spiciness makes you straighten up and take notice from the get go. A darker feeling than the bourbon, the rye has more body, and a plethora of interesting high notes like clove, anise, nutmeg and cinnamon. But, these are all fleeting notions. The main character here is the rye. A young spirit (aged a minimum of 2 years), but you’d be forgiven if you thought this was a 4-year-old. Really a tremendous rye that will be the star of your next Sazerac, Algonquin or Vieux Carre.

A taste thst is thankfully better than its name. It doesnt have the wicked Kentucky burbon or scotch sting to it. You can really taste the flavor. Chicken Cock is thick but smooth. Just enough bite to feel like cinnamon. At the price point, this is a solid goto whiskey. I don’t care how insecure you are about trying new things, you’ll want more Chicken Cock the moment it first touches your tongue!

Picked this up because I loved the package and had never seen it before. Did a little google search and found out it is an preprohibition brand making a come back...even better! I am a big fan of rye, and this did not disappoint. Has a spicy nose that changed as it sat it my glass, first funky, then sweet. Great mouth feel, tastes like an earthy butterscotch.

Solid, solid rye. I seem to favor ryes now, and I was very pleasantly surprised at how much i enjoyed this one. One word comes to mind: balanced. Has most of the hallmark rye flavors and fhe spicy finish yet nothing is overbearing. Went to buy note and couldnt find it. Guess the secret is out for this funny-named distiller’s rye!

This is much better than the straight cock bourbon. See that tasting for details, but, ironically, it has an unpleasant finish. This cock is sweeter and has an initial bit of honey which is nice. I’d give it a thin 5.25 if I could.

Very sweet rye up front. Lots of red-hot flavor with a touch of vanilla. There is herbal and a skosh of iodine midway through the taste. I like it. Thieved this rye at thieving tasting at Bardstown. Tasty and fun!
