This bottle was gifted to me and not available for purchase in my area, therefore, no price provided. On the nose vanilla, white grapefruit, and pepper come through immediately with lighter notes of smoke, and burnt sugar. Going in deeper, a marmalade note comes across. The first mouth swish hits and coats the tongue with the sugar notes and the back of the throat gets a gentle tickle of the spices. The teeth are coated as well filling the entire mouth with a long lasting finish. Lovely. Further sips bring out the citrus and mellow out the spices with the brown sugar and vanilla now taking most of the profile. The upper palate is now coated with most of the taste remaining focused there. This is a very nice rye and worthy of a spot on anyone's bar. About this bottle
Frey Ranch is a farm-to-glass distillery with 100% of the grains grown on its 1500-acre farm in Fallon, Nevada. For their inaugural Straight Rye release, 100% winter cereal rye is used in the mash. Additionally, this is a bottled-in-bond release--distilled at one distillery, the product of one season, and aged for four years in a bonded warehouse and is bottled at 50% ABV. It is not chill-filtered. Batch 1 & 2 will consist of 3,000 and 2,400 bottles respectively. Availability limited to Nevada as of July 2020.

Batch 3, Bottle 1579/3500. Light banana, dry grass, and ethanol on the nose. Spicy rye, vanilla oak, sweet grain, and dried fruit in the mouth. Sweet and spice battle each other in the long-ish finish. Medium mouthfeel, dark golden straw color. Pleasant to sip neat or with a cube. A solid brawny straight rye at 50 abv with a great local production story, farm to barrel to bottle. Cheers to that! And that wide, squat, and thick bottle has an extra-thick glass bottom, plus a heavy oversize metal top on the synthetic stopper. All that makes this a surprisingly HEAVY lift to carry and pour. That presentation has gotta contribute some to the cost, $58, which is substantial. That said, it's still a rye worth finding and trying.
NOSE Caramel corn, rye bread, fresh muffins, copper, vanilla custard, caramel candy and a slight nutty note with some baking spice and oak. If I had one word to describe the aroma it would be fresh. It’s so clean, complex and interesting despite its lack of oak… I’m impressed. PALATE Grainy sweet, oak, herbal spice, vanilla custard, caramel candy, citrus peels and cocoa with a touch of dill and earth. Not quite as clean and crisp as the aroma, more earthy and grounded. It’s heavier. FINISH Med-long -> Dilly baking spice, oak and a bit of fruit fade out
A bold, Bottled-in-Bond Straight Rye Whiskey by Frey Ranch Farmers + Distillers in Nevada crafted with 100% sustainably grown Winter Cereal Rye in a Vendome still aged in new American white oak barrels for a minimum of 2 years before being bottled at 100 proof. It has an aromatic birth with notes of grain, wood, fruits, herbs & spices; while a full & spicy life adds notes of rye spice, raisin, citrus, vanilla & caramel; that led to a warm death of medium length with notes of pepper, oak, honey-butter, ginger & cocoa. Flaviar sample box “Ryenaissance” July, 2022 Sample C Pour/Color: The darkest of the three, but appears relatively light in density Nose: Fantastic, deep, and quite complex. Floral caramel notes First taste: A pop of rye spice, but vanillas, molasses, caramels, and chocolate of a bourbon are present and noticeably soft Lingering: Dark chocolate and sweet notes linger Score: 3.5 (best of the three, would on the fence about buying)
5/5 for Frey Ranch on the sustainabilty element with how they are making their bourbon and rye. This drinks like an older craft distillery. Its a tasty product and i would buy it again. Their rye is better than their bourbon. I would love to try a barrel/cask strength product but they are a little pricy to buy a bottle just to try. Glad to see them getting more distribution too.
