About this bottle

Chinaco is the only brand of tequila made in the northern state of Tamaulipas, and in fact the owner of the distillery had to fight to have it included in the designated area for tequila production. These tequilas are distilled from Tamaulipas-grown agave both from the highlands and near the coast, as well as a small amount harvested from Jalisco. The añejo is aged two and a half years in casks formerly used to mature Glenlivet single malt (90%) and ex-Bourbon barrels (10%).

This was an unexpected try for me. I admit I was already a little under when I had the chance to taste, so my impressions can’t be as sharp as I prefer. However, The nose is sweet like salted caramel and key lime pie, but the palate is practically a juxtaposition with its rather intense woodiness. The same rich limey agave flavor comes through with wood, black pepper and charcoal which sticks to your tongue on the finish. It became more interesting as the spicy finish became numbed, with more of the savory and sweet elements pushing forward. Namely more salted caramel and vanilla. Another reviewer noted ‘celery’ in the finish, and very strangely enough, I agree. There’s also a fair touch of ethanol present. I disliked it at first but it really grew on me once I got past the wood. Maybe I’m just new to añejo..?

Neat. Nose is oak, earth, leather, herbs, with slight roasted agave, char, and a hint of vanilla. Very lovely and counter to many that are on the sweet/vanilla side. Taste is fairly light and starts with the oak, then mild sweetness from agave, honey/light caramel, anise. Finish is light and clean with some herbal bitterness, very light sweetness and an oily mouthfeel I really like what this tequila brings to my collection. The earthy/herbal/oily combination is unique and is a nice contrast to so many other tequilas. I'll keep a bottle around for the variety, but value is iffy for a regular pour

What a week...yesterday was my first rum, today my first tequila. Thank you Davie for this amazing bottle! I'm not sure what's a good tequila or not so good...so I won't rank stars here. On to the notes ---found this particular tequila amazing. Right at opening the bottle, I was able to smell grass, sea salt, and lime. I can smell this all day. Taste is more of the same---sweet and salty, fresh green lime, and a hint of smoke---like a mild peat Islander. I really like this---maybe the first spirit outside red wine and whiskey that I truly enjoyed. Davie---thank you!

All hands on deck! We are now entering uncharted waters... There's a lot of going on in here totally unfamiliar to me, these are the notes I can even recognize, so just try to keep up. Nose: sea salt, tart lime, creamy vanilla and earthy pine, even a whiff of gin-like juniper. Palate: sweet and salty, juicy tropical fruits, including tart and slightly unripe kiwi, some mint, trace of smoke. Finish: huge, earthy, mildly spicy, with everlasting fresh celery. That's right, celery. Until breakfast. Dry glass: aromatic sandalwood.
