May 2019 distillation date. 52% Tepeztate, 35% Tobala, 13% Espadin. 51.5% abv. Cork smells just like an Islay Scotch. Nose has a complex, smoky, sweet/sour funk to it. First sip has a spicy, peppery, semi-sweet Goodyear tire vibe. Smoke hangs on the tongue for a long finish. Later tastes lessen the new tire notes and uncover more sweetness and jungle fruit nuances. Certainly a complex, well crafted Mezcal.
About this bottle
In contrast to his single-variety mezcals, this special bottling is made from whichever plants are at their peak maturity, meaning that each successive batch will have a different varietal composition. For this batch, Tío Rey loaded up his trademark clay pot-still with Espadín (62%), Coyote (28%) and Mexicano (10%) agaves.

Lot S-01/08-ECBB-17 On the nose: clay, butter, cinnamon banana Tastes: creamy mouthfeel leads to warm tingles that envelope the mouth. Mild sea salt, soft leather, and pine. This will be a great winter time mezcal that I’ll be sipping by the fire.
Harsher than cuentacuentos (coyote), not as harsh as Nuestra Soledad Sta. Ma. Zoquitlan. Good layering of flavors, harshness. Exciting mezcal!
Five stars for Lot S-01-CME-16, 78% Coyote/18% Espadin/4% Mexicano; 52% ABV. Warm, bright, dry spices, sizzles on the tongue.
Very smokey and distinct, only need a little bit. Tried at the social as a drink to go with a cigar.
A lovely mezcal. Delicate taste that gets lost in cocktails and is best enjoyed as is.
