Taste- 1.5 oz. Tasting at Binny's Cody Road Tasting Seminar. First in the group of the entire lineup that evening. Nose- the nose is young, right away I notice sweetcorn and a bit of crackerjack box. There is some undesired ethanol which does waft off after resting a bit. Palate- Meh is my first impression. Best way to describe is whiskey soaked caramel corn. The mouthfeel though is buttery and richer than anticipated which surprised me after noting the pale color. If one word described the palate it would be mashy. At 90 proof it is a tad hot. Finish: kind of simply falls apart. Not much going on here. You go out on much of the same popcorn ball hit that you came in on. Overall- it is just young bourbon. There are some elements that I liked- caramel corn, butter and thicker mouthfeel, and then things I just was missing- fruitier elements, some spiciness, oak. It's just not there.
About this bottle
From the MIssissippi River Distilling Company in Le Claire, Iowa this product is bottled at 90 proof after spending one year in 30 gallon newly charred oak barrels. Its mash bill is comprised of 70% corn from Le Claire, 20% wheat and 10% un-malted barley both from Reynolds, IL, a town less than an hour away. One extremely cool feature is that each bottle is hand-labeled and for more information, including the names of the farmers who raised their grain, they offer a section labeled “Batch Notes” on their website.

Sweet on the nose with notes of floral, citrus, and hints of raisins. First sip has a slow moderate burn with continued notes of floral. Not terribly complex but still good. Cody Road has several different options, this is my first taste, and whereas this isn’t too complex it does give enough interest I am wanting to try a different offering.
Barrel heavy on the nose. Feels more like new sawdust then an old barrel. Sweetness of the corn prevails on the palate, with a bright lemon grass herbal quality and hints of vanilla. I think that bringing this up to 90 proof certainly made it more flavorful, but I do taste whiffs of ethanol that shouldn’t be there too.
Nose: cereal grains and ethanol forward. On the palate, a more easygoing wheater than the ethanol on the nose suggests. Clearly young, but not harsh like many young wheaters can be. Not overly complex, corn, caramel, hint of dark fruit (cherry?). Relatively short and simple finish, just fades away, no surprises.
Kinda smells like a dead hog with a leather purse in a sow's ear, horrible mouth feel. It's smoky, but not in a positive way, more like "Wow, feels like I just smoked a pack and a half of Marlboro reds and followed it with a carton of menthol golds". Would recommend to someone who lacks a sense of smell.
Love their rye but this one needs something more. Light mouth feel and kind of bland. Batch 1615 bottle 675.
