Part I – Neat (with Disc Chiller) Appearance: Beautiful silver tone—clear, bright, and elegant. Visually inviting. Nose: Starkly medicinal. Feels sterile, off-putting. There's a strong mineral bite, like metallic spring water or clinical alcohol. Palate: Surprisingly soft entry. Mild warmth, slight sweetness—more like simple syrup than anything with character. The sweetness lacks nuance. No molasses, no cane, no fruit—just sugar-like blandness. It’s smoother than the dark Cruzan, but so filtered that it feels stripped of identity. Hints at vodka, not rum. Flat but technically drinkable. Initial Verdict: Sippable in form, but not in function. Drinkable if there’s nothing else—but not compelling. The dark rum offers more grit and bite, but it at least has something to say. --- Part II – On the Rocks Nose: Slightly improved. The ice dulls the harsh medicinal edge but replaces it with more watery mineral tones. Palate: Collapsed. Whatever faint rum notes existed neat are now erased. What’s left is soft, cold... and nearly flavorless. There’s no bite, no sweetness, no presence. Smoothness is achieved by subtraction, not refinement. This isn’t just filtered—it feels bleached. Like someone pressed reset on flavor. Final Verdict: Not worth sipping in any configuration. As a mixer, it might serve in the background—but it contributes little, and likely fades beneath anything added. Regrettable even at its price. Cruzan Dark remains the clear winner between the two, if only because it still has a voice. --- Poem – Reflection on Cruzan Light Rum For a spirit so pale, so silent and still, I held out my glass with a tremble of will. The nose warned me gently: “Turn back, there’s no fire,” But the tongue gave it room, chasing subtle desire. It whispered of water, not wind, not of cane, A sip without story, a pour without name. No shadow of sugar, no echo of oak— Just a mineral ghost in a see-through cloak. So I’ll shelve it for cola, or pour with a sigh, And toast to the bottles that dare more than try. For even cheap spirits can shimmer or sing— But this one just sits there, and doesn’t bring a thing.

Cruzan Light Aged Rum – 1 Star Third Tasting – Mixer Attempt I tried. I truly tried to be open-minded. But on this third tasting—using it as a mixer with Coke, six ice cubes, and sheer optimism—Cruzan Light Aged Rum revealed its true nature: horrific. The nose? Rubbing alcohol and regret. The taste? A confused mineral bath, stripped of anything remotely resembling the richness or soul of rum. This isn’t light—this is empty. The filtering process seems to have removed everything but the offense. And here’s the kicker: I’ve had vodkas one-third the price that are more palatable. This bottle is so devoid of character, so jarring even in dilution, it barely qualifies as a spirit at all. What makes this all the more insulting is that Cruzan Dark Rum is actually sippable on the rocks. This? This is the hollow echo of what might have once dreamed of being rum. I’ll finish the bottle because I hate waste. But I regret buying it, I resent drinking it, and I absolutely would not recommend it. --- Elegy for a Rum That Wasn’t By Sophie Oh clear pretender, pale and thin, No depth, no fire, no soul within. You came in glass with hopeful name— But left my tongue with scorched disdain. No sugar’s kiss, no barrel’s grace, Just bitter air and ghostly trace. A vodka’s shadow, bland and cold, Yet priced as if your worth were gold. You mocked my Coke, you mocked my ice, You couldn’t even mix up nice. The Dark, at least, can stand with pride— But you, Light Rum, are shame disguised. No poem should mourn your tasteless reign— But here you lie: in crafted shame. Let future drinkers mark this page— And leave you buried in the cage.

One of my favorite white rums for mixing. Nose is a little sharper with alcohol than other white rums but it is also enriched with toasted coconut, vanilla and toffee notes. The palate is a little sharp on the back end but starts with minute sweetness and quickly turns drier. Hints of those toasted coconut covered marshmallows and distant wood, vanilla and tropical fruit and essence. Bright and relatively neutral but that extra flavor and slight woolliness really makes outstanding cocktails. That is what a good white rum does. Adds a little bit of natural character to cocktails but isn’t offensive or overbearing. Otherwise, you might as well use vodka instead. $18-21/1.75L is an awesome price. A++ in Key Lime Daiquiris!

12.13.22 Run through (1-2) Served: Neat then ice, Glencairn Bottle Open: Same Day Last intake: dark chocolate Aroma. Light banana and clove. Light vanilla and caramel. Custardy. Flavor: Much Darker. Elements of coffee and banana. Has a surprising amount of burn for 40%. Bittersweet like burnt bread. Wouldn't order neat, but I know that this mixes well based on experience. Grows on me as I drink it. Responds well to a bit of ice. Burn is reduced and sweetness/coffee is diminished.

This almost works as a sipper, as light rums go. ALMOST. There’s definitely some oak, caramel and tropical fruit notes going on. It’s still best used as the backbone of your rum based cocktails since its not just tropical vodka and it’ll add its own character. If you MUST sip a light rum neat, you could do much worse. This and Plantation 3 star are my light rums of choice.

You know, this isn't actually bad. Nose is light and clean with citrus and grass notes. Palate is sweet and relatively smooth. Finish is lacking, and there's definitely some raw ethanol bite going on, but for the price this has a lot of character and tastes pretty decent.
