Have had the Dry Fly Triticale 5 year port barrel finish several years ago, and loved it. Time to try their 3 year straight triticale 45% ABV. Triticale, a hearty Scottish wheat-rye hybrid, locally sourced in Washington. Tasting neat. Golden straw color and average coating legs in the glass. Nose is light, floral grain, bubble gum, with a whiff of spice far far back. On the palate, dry ethanol and baking spices, mint, and sour earthy grape must. Sweet shows up, but it's dry not juicy. Finish is sweet/sour, dry grass, and mint. Dry, and leaves a lingering tingling mouthfeel. An ice cube really breaks down the initial dry ethanol rush and makes this quite enjoyable, like a younger rye. It's an interesting whiskey, as all Dry Flys are. I appreciate what they're trying to do with wheat and grains from eastern Washington. I still think most of their products could use more time in oak (since the 5 and 6 year versions have been so much better than the 3 year bottles). That said, nothing bad here, more like a young rye whiskey.
About this bottle
Triticale is what happens when a species of wheat and a species of rye are crossed together to form one grain, as was first practiced in late 19th century Scotland. The folks at Dry Fly in Washington state, led by Don Poffenroth and Kent Flieschmann, got their hands on some seeds and distilled it. It's perhaps the only whiskey on the market made from this rare hybrid seed.

An intense, American Grain Whiskey aged for 3 years in American Oak by Dry Fly Distillery, the first legal distillery in Washington State since Prohibition. It has an earthy birth with notes of spicy vanilla, caramel, a hint of fruit & lavender; while a spicy life adds floral, wheat & rye notes; that led to a long death with notes of more rye spice (peppery ginger). August / December 2018 / August 2022
Caveat: I have a 5 year old Total Wine exclusive bottle, not this one specifically. It's spicy and appley. Adding a drop of water makes the peppery notes just explode on the mid taste and finish Another drop and the spice tones down a little and the sweetness takes center stage. This is a whiskey that'll take you on a journey.
A very approachable pour to someone new to Bourbon or who likes a tamer dram. It is very light, soft and sweet due to the wheat character and hints of Rye notes all wrapped in a unique hybrid grain. The aromas and flavors meld together nicely. It is a good whiskey but won’t be repeated as it’s a Washington exclusive.
Good call by Ms. Schuster on the wheat toast with cinnamon. Nose is medium, definite cereal nose with rye spice builds and overtakes wheat in the finish, which is fairly long.
Super light sweet aroma. Plain sugar flavor, maybe cane sugar? Very light flavor, wood and maybe some wheat or rye. Thin body, short finish, a little young tasting.
