About this bottle

Produced in Los Altos in Jalisco at the famous La Alteña Distillery established by Don Felipe Camarena in 1937. Today his grandson, Carlos Camarena, is the master distiller. El Tesoro uses 100% estate-grown agave in its production. After cooking, the agaves are crushed using a tractor-pulled tahona. Post-distillation, the reposado is aged from 9-11 months in ex-bourbon barrels. Please note a packaging update in April 2018. (SRP $65)

Rating: 15/23 I previously had a bottle of the blanco. I liked the profile, but it was all so subtle and mild. Still, I hear great things about this brand, so I'm looking forward to trying this one too and I'm hopeful that I will like it better. N: Not a promising start. It's a very faint nose. I mainly get some light musty cardboard. There's a hint of brine. P: This is much more substantial than the palate led me to fear. It isn't big and full of flavor, but it works. There's musty cardboard leading into mild wood, pepper, some minerals, slightly sweet brine, a reference to cinnamon, a faint hint of mint, and something mild that's vaguely fruity like apples, underripe bananas, and lime. at points, some rich, sweet, somewhat savory stewed agave comes through, but it is never a very full flavor. F: A tad drying. Brine, minerals, a little mint, some lime, sweet and savory stewed agave. - Conclusion - The balance and complexity here are good, though I'd personally like some more oomph. This is more refined but less full than Partida Blanco. Putting them side by side, they're closer than I'd expected. What this definitely loses to though is Tapatio Blanco. It's quite clear that even the mild mannered Tapatio Blanco has more oomph than this does. Still, this isn't that far behind. But Próspero Blanco isn't that far behind this either. I think I need to go for either a 14 or a 15 for this. Actually, it could be a 16. I'm leaning toward a 15. A 15 it is. Thank you for sharing this, @ctbeck11

This is my go to reposado tequila for cocktails (one's that are spirit forward). Unlike a lot of reposado tequilas that I have tried, this one tends to have less pronounced oak and sweetness and leans more heavily on the agave. The nose is a bit light, but you get the agave and a mineral like smell. The palate is where this one shines, as it has hints of smoke, lime, spice and a touch of sweetness. The finish is pretty long, with no heat and a bit briney. Overall, it's hard to go wrong with this tequila. It's a touch expensive, which is why I don't use it in cocktails that tend to have large amounts of juice or mixer in it. But neat, this is one of the better reposado tequilas out there. I would probably still favor the blanco over this, but not by much. It would probably come down to preference, but either way you can't go wrong with either (and really the anejo for that matter).

El Tesoro Reposado follows suit with its blanco counterpart. Delivering strong presence of citrus, agave, and spice. La Altena produces some of the highest quality tahona-style tequila with traditional methods and altos influence. It has a honey like golden color with a buttery texture. On the nose we will notice aromas of citrus, cooked agave, almonds, vanilla, and flashes of oak. The flavors follow suit with nuances of cooked agave, orange peel, black pepper, clove, and oak. The finish is not as prolonged but it leaves a spicy undertone on the tongue with lingering agave and honey on the throat.

Neat. Nose is delicate and balanced. Roasted agave, oak saw dust, green herbs. Taste is agave sweet, exotic fruits, oak and cedar, touch of vanila, some grassy tarragon, mint, pepper and minerals. Finish is medium with a more natural sweetness than most that perfectly balanced with bitter and sweet. Mouthfeel is a honest middle. Overall, this is a natural and well crafted tequila.. No dominating artificial flavors, and lots of flavors to discover and enjoy. This is a sipper. Mixing and shooting would be a waste.. Sip and savor. This may be my favorite line of tequila

Nose - sweet cooked agave, lime, black pepper, vegetal earthiness, subtle caramel, moderate minerality, nutmeg, clove, light barrel char, cocoa, mild ethanol burn. Taste - sweet cooked agave, lime, tropical fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla bean, butterscotch, earthy grassiness, mineral notes, mild cocoa like char, mild alcohol bite, finishing quickly with fading pepper, citrus, chocolate, and agave flavors. Very solid, but not amazing. It’s a good sipper and makes a really nice margarita.

I've drank plenty of whiskey, rum and brandy but this is my 1st bottle of tequila. Pours almost clear with a slight beige tinge. Nose is salt, alcohol and black pepper. Taste is cooked agave, smoke, some sweetness and a hint of green pepper and mint. Medium mouthfeel. Medium, clean finish. I'm going to enjoy going down this rabbit hole. Side note... the stopper is like a mini tahona and it's somewhat heavy. Handle it with care.
