This smells quite sour and minty with some other slight hints of caramel and a more substantial wood element. There isn't a huge amount of age apparent here. The palate is sweeter than expected with some of that Fortaleza smoke and vegetal flavor mixed with green olive, pineapple, and caramel (stewed agave). The finish is delightful in that it is sufficiently sweet. The balance is very good and this is wonderful in how quintessential of a tequila it is. The mint comes through on the palate a little and it is definitely a little bit in the spearmint vein but it isn't too bad. The Fortaleza umami makes it through. I with that there were a bit more complexity to tie everything together, specifically in the area of depth of flavor over time, but as it is the flavor is very good. I would happily sip this. It has some spiciness for sure, but although it is strong, it is not overwhelming. Some mineral does come in, but it is well under control. This isn't an all-time favorite drink, but it is very well executed. The green olive masks any alcohol too. From any angle, this is an interesting drink. It's a bit mild, but it's quite good in how it has interesting flavors that avoid common pitfalls of grossness.
About this bottle
Fortaleza Añejo Tequila is made from 100% blue weber agave grown in the Tequila Valley of Jalisco. The piñas or hearts of the agave plants are roasted in a traditional stone oven before being stone crushed. The juice called "mosto" is fermented for 3.5 days in open air wood tanks using natural yeast present in the air and plants to ferment the mosto. The fermented product is double distilled in copper pot stills before the spirit is aged for 18 months in used whiskey American oak barrels.

Enjoying neat. Lovely golden straw color. Coats the glass nicely. Nose is fresh oak, char, agave, earth/minerals, brine, light caramel, vanilla, citrus, and fresh herbs. Rich, creamy, and oily mouthfeel. Taste starts roasted agave, caramel, fresh oak, vanilla. A lot of complex flavors come in, vegetal, brine, mint, some slight funky umami/yeast notes, cinnamon, pineapple. Finish is nice and long with flavors changing over more than 60 seconds. Sweetness, oak tannins, fruit, slight anise, mint, black pepper...and more Wow. One of the most complex tequilas that I've tried. Sweet and savory notes. Lots of wood, but light on vanilla, which i prefer. It's a little pricey, but it's absolutely worth it. Additive free and superb quality
An extremely delicious Anejo. All of the main things youre looking for in a solid anejo are here. You get the sweetness from caramel and vanilla, the slight bitterness from the oak, some floral agave flavor, and some ever so slight hints of slice on the finish. Its also incredibly smooth and easy to drink. Its a little expensive and my biggest knock against it. Id also like it a little more if it was a tad stronger, closer to 90 proof. Neither consequence is so major that id wouldnt buy it again.
Caramel, vanilla, butterscotch and cooked agave aromas practically jump from the glass in this highly-praised and perfectly-aged añejo. This tequila is so rich and complex detect pineapple, peach, orange blossom, nutmeg, and raisin in the nose. Once in your mouth, the full cooked agave experience continues with a thick and oily texture that coats your mouth in a very soothing way. Butterscotch, caramel, toffee, citrus, and hazelnuts are common flavors that people identify.
Wow...this is good. If anyone has preconceived notions of tequila based on a few bottom shelf versions, this will negate those beliefs. Grassy aroma upfront, very herbaceous. But the palette is where this shines. Taste is less herbal, but goes into pineapple, some oak. Oily and full. Strong caramel as well. Finish lingers. For about $65-75, this is a no-brainer great VFM. Thanks @ctbeck11 for the pour!
Nice nose of sweet and wood notes. Taste is big in wood and pepper with some citrus towards the end. Not much bite or alcohol burn and good complexity that hangs around for a good time. Like the bottle and cork, my wife broke the agave-styled cork & this beauty now sits on top of our whisky cabinet front and center in a glass decanter.
