Sweet vanilla and on the nose. Burst of corn syrup sweetness, and then astringent dry oak takes over. Citrus peel bitters and tannins. Thin mouthfeel, and light straw color. Rye pepper and spice comes on and then dry tannic vanilla oak in a long finish. Gets a little acrid at the very tail. Second pass at this. Neat taste about the same, maybe noticing a honeysuckle sweetness buried in there. Then Ice, which softens the tannic finish a little, letting the honeysuckle and rye spice and bitter citrus catch up, but not enough. Finish turns more sour. As the ice melts and lowers the ABV this becomes an easy drink. I expect this will make a good cocktail bourbon--my next test. A little underwhelmed. I know MGP bourbons pretty well and appreciate them in other people's bottles, so I was expecting more from the juice they're putting out under their own label. I have had their Remus Repeal Reserve Series V, and it is great. This... not so much. Will keep chewing on this.
About this bottle
This straight bourbon takes its name from Cincinnati Prohibition-era bootlegger George Remus, known as the “King of the Bootleggers.” The George Remus brand was acquired by Ross & Squibb Distillery (formerly MGP Ingredients) from Queen City Whiskey Co. in November 2016. This expression serves as the entry-level bourbon in the portfolio and is a blend of high-rye bourbons aged a minimum of four years. It is bottled at 47% ABV.

First glass out of a new bottle. On the nose, I get maraschino cherries, apple, and a little Werther's Original. Flavor is pretty middle of the road. Vanilla, medium sweet, with a slight bit of barrel char throughout. It is on the lighter side, but the proof means that it doesn't taste flat. Shorter finish, with the oakiness coming to the foreground. My first impressions are that this is very nice tasting throughout, and a decent, but not outstanding bottle in the under $30 category. Looking forward to a second glass.
First impressions where a not great and I had a lot of alcohol on the nose. I has been open about 1.5 weeks now and starting to open up. I get Carmel and vanilla with hints of oak and brown sugar. On the palate it starts out sweet with some sweet oak and then right into the rye spice the finish is medium with a slow burn on the palate that moves down to the chest. Overall not the most interesting pour, I would like to try the Remus Repel which I hear good things about.
On the nose: I get toasted marshmallow with hints of honey, vanilla, and caramel On the palate: A nice light toasted caramel flavor with hints of green apple and citrus. The finish: the best part. The citrus is just enough to combine with this sweet bourbon to create an old fashioned type of aftertaste. Overall: great stuff! Will be trying this again soon!
A yummy rich and sweet whiskey. Dried apple slices drizzled with caramel and dusted with cinnamon and brown sugar — all that on the nose. The palate is rtich and nearly bitter with flavours of all spice, cloves, and cinnamon. The finish lingers and as the spice flavor fades a bit of mint comes in, but it’s mostly like candied sugars.
Finally, I got around to the famed Remus. The nose gives off char and light smoke. The white oak really comes through. Scents of caramel dominate your senses matched with sweet vanilla and baking spices in your typical bourbon notes. Smooth taste but no complexity. Slight heat that lingers with caramel. Solid
