About this bottle
Scottish Gaelic for "baked," Glenmorangie Bacalta debuted in early 2017 as part of the brand's Private Edition releases. For this 8th release in the series, Master Distiller Bill Lumsden wanted to improve upon a previous Glenmorangie expression, the Madeira Wood Finish, that has been discontinued since 2004. He found a winery willing to create a Malmsey Madeira wine that would never be bottled and only be used to season hogsheads made from toasted American oak. After two years exposed to the elements, "baking" under the sun, the hogsheads were emptied then filled with single malt that had been maturing in ex-bourbon barrels for 10 years. After another two years of finishing in the Madeira hogsheads, this non-chillfiltered Highland malt was finally ready for bottling at 46% ABV.

NOSE Sultanas, Honey Nut Cheerios, white peaches, malty milk chocolate covered graham, dried fruit and bits of vanilla pudding and butterscotch. Decadent and rich, the sweetness comes in layers. PALATE Sultanas, baked honeycomb, white peaches, malty milk chocolate covered graham, dried fruit and bits of vanilla pudding and butterscotch with a touch of candied fig. Almost a carbon copy from the aroma and comes in with a bit more depth and complexity. FINISH Medium – Long -> Sultanas, banana pudding, malt, butterscotch and a slightly spicy fade.
Received as part of a blind testing. My notes: Colour 0.7 - amber, nose is fruit and Speyside sweetness, hints of green apple and floral notes with a touch of malt - Glenlivet-like (but not Glenlivet as there is no colouring). Palate has spice and pepper but some sweetness and fruit notes. An ultra light hint of smoke? Finish is medium, B-. (Followed with Johnnie Walker Green, now I don’t get any smoke and it isn’t as good as green.)
Honey mead dominates, dessert wine, melon, candied fruits, caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, maple syrup, brandy, cream soda, candle, Mexican candy chili powder. EXTREMELY decadent, if your not a fan of sweet give this a pass. I for one am in love and shall saver every drop. Quite possibly the best Scottish whiskey I've every tried.
Dense and fruity. The viscosity of the wine is evident, and the oils help the finish play on. I’d compare it to other wine-finished Glenmorangies in terms of richness, oiliness and fruitiness. The red fruit coats the tongue, but the balance of earthiness, malt and fruit is lacking compared to others like the Companta or Tayne.
A lovely honeyed tropical and floral sweetness. Nose: Honey, Oranges, Marzipan, Pineapples, Apricots, Almonds, Figs, Passion Fruit, Milk Chocolate Palate: Vanilla, Honey, Sultanas, Figs, Pineapples, Almonds, Tangerines, Lychee, Pears Finish: Vanilla, Marzipan, Pineapples, Sultanas, Bananas, Wildflowers, Sunflowers
