About this bottle

Part of the US's burgeoning grain-to-glass movement, the Great Traverse Distillery in Traverse City, Michigan opened in 2007, using local grains to make a range of distillates. It distills and ages all of its own spirits. The Double Barrel Ole George is a limited-production variant of its standard straight rye whiskey, which is made from a 100% rye mash bill. This offering is transferred into a toasted French oak cask for further maturation for 6-18 months; hence, the "Double Barrel" moniker. Non-chill-filtered, it's bottled at 46.5% ABV.

The nose is fairly neutral, not too much jumps out other than caramel. The palet is very straightforward with caramel rightbup front followed by rye spice and new oak flavor. I picked up something like candied fruit as well. The finish is very similar to the palet with rye and new oak, the candied fruit transitions almost to a raisin flavor. The price is quite high for this for what it brings. A good tasting rye that is a good entry level complexity, worth more in the $40-$50 than $70-$80, though i did buy from the distillery itself so might be somewhat inflated.

The first taste is hot and lingering. A strong nose makes my eyes water if I keep my nose in the glass too long. I liked it better when I was on vacation in Traverse City. The distillery was well worth the visit. I spent a couple hours talking to the distiller and tasting everything he threw at me.

Figured it would be like Angel’s Envy, but lacked depth of flavor. Really just a slightly sweeter, mellower version of their Rye, which I like. There was no reason to “upgrade” to this whiskey.

Gwilkins 3.5

Much spicier on the nose than the original. Spicy, graham cracker, herbal bright pepper. The french oak is great but a bit much. Charred sugar notes.

Better than the bourbon from Grand Traverse Distillery. Fairly smooth. Can not justify paying $50/750 ml for this one.

Spice on the nose. Has some grain, young, rye spice. Medium heat with a medium finish
