My rating is pretty consistent with the last review though. I dropped it a quarter star I very much enjoy this rye as it offers a little more complexity, especially at a $50 price point than similar ryes. The dominant note that I pulled through today on the nose was a black tea which is not surprising because I get this from other Jim Rutledge ryes like Cream of Kentucky. It’s definitely not as thick as the Cream of Kentucky rye, but still offers light cedar notes along with that black tea note. The finish is not particularly impressive and it’s not spicy as ryes go however, what brings me back to this is the different notes presents from glass to glass and the complexity that it offers at the price point as well As a lets traditional rye, and one that a bourbon drinker may enjoy

It’s December 3, and I’m going to try a new rye whiskey every day this month. And while my rye game is not as weak as my Scotch game was this time last year, I’m always up for suggestions on good rye whiskies. And now that I have goals (it’s good to have goals), there are some key players I could use your help finding. Goals (abridged): 5 ryes. 4 stars. Readily available. (0/5) I want to taste the difference between any bourbon and any rye. First try. One of these must be an Empire Rye. I want a raunchy rye. I want the one that tastes like dill relish served from a pirates boot from princess Ariel’s human stuff collection. While still underwater. >>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Extremely nice nose …. more bourbon like than rye. Very sweet with some of that rye spice coming through. On the taste, the rye definitely comes through as it drinks like a very well balanced rye and the proof point is spot on with nice warming on the finish without being proofy. An excellent expression. Glad I have a backup.
Nose: Oak, Vanilla, not overly indicative of a Rye Palate: Thick, Rye Bread, Pepper, Syrup, Dill, Black Licorice Finish: Quick, Sweet and some Oak Overall: A great Rye blend, interesting nose and palate difference.. Worth the 50$
Vanilla rye spice nose. Plum, sweet corn, licorice, rye dill, medium length dry finish. Maybe slight chocolate in the finish?
Floral notes and spice in the aroma. Slightly wavxy up front then a good spice character with heavy rye character.
