Chichibu On The Way 2019 - 51.5 % ABV, sample bottle. Nose: Sweet vanilla and floral up front, like a bouquet of roses covered in creamy vanilla icing. Fruits and spices with honeydew melons, stewed white nectarines, apples, Asian pears, cinnamon, cloves and mild oak. Palate: Sweet oak and woody up front, but gives way to sweet malts, baking spices and stewed white nectarines, apples and Asian pears. The wood lingers from start to finish, with oak spice that gives way to sweet oak, malts, and hints of mild tobacco. Sweet fruits throughout with a long finish. Final Thoughts: Very complex and enjoyable. One of those glasses you can nose and taste forever. All the while finding new subtle notes along the way.
Chichibu On The Way 2015 Release An elegant, single malt by mastermind Ichiro Akito in Japan first aged in Bourbon casks & finished in Mizunara Japanese oak casks. He founded the famous Chichibu distillery in 2008. It has an herbaceous birth with notes of toasted oak, peat, smoke, syrup & hints of caramel & tinned peaches; while a rich life adds baking spices, apple turnovers, pear, cola & nutty malt; that led to a balanced death with notes of cereal, sherry, dried apple chips & hints of sawdust. September 2017 / May 2018 / August 2022
If this is on the way, I can't wait till it's there. Obviously young, but doesn't show it. Like a really well matured little kid that acts way ahead of his /her age. Polished and elegant; quality through and through. Nose opens with smoke and melons. Flavors of salted caramel, green apples and ripe melons. A bit of peaty smoke, but very different than the Islay or Islander. I'm glad I bought a sample, but now wishing I got the full bottle.
Tried the 2015 edition of this at a drammers club dekanta tasting. Aged in 1 bourbon cask, 1 refill cask, and 1 Mizunara cask. Very good with notes of Vanilla, Caramel, Lychee, Sandalwood, Yuzu, Peach, Mango, Flowers, Cherry, Pepper, Grass, and Coconut with a malty, buttery, and creamy mouthfeel.
The 2013 bottling of this (the only I've tasted) is sublime. Tasting canned fruit brought me back to my childhood, the long finish snapped me back to the present. This whiskey gave me a journey, and one I thoroughly enjoyed, and isn't that the point? delicious
