Review #55 - Whisk(e)y #39 Bought in trio tasting pack, together with the Jameson Original and Black Barrel (50ml each), for just under 8 euros, which seems like quite a good deal. Chill-filtered - Yes Artifical Colour - Yes ABV - 40% Aspect - Deep gold colour with amber accents, quite oily actually. Nose - initially quite muted (opens up a bit with time), more rounded and darker than the Jameson Original, with very strong creamy-milk chocolate note, subtle dark chocolate bitterness, and some noticeable alcohol note. There is still the orchard fruit base (pear and red apple) hidden underneath. Palate - sweet and creamy front-end with some coffee aroma and chocolate, turns sharp spiced and alcohol-forward on mid-palate, gradually fading towards the finish. Finish - medium, much longer than I have anticipated. Slightly bitter, oaky, dry, dark chocolate after-taste...but there is also something else I cannot quite pinpoint, slightly weird. The late after-taste offers prominent coffee aroma. Difficult to rate, quite different to the Original, more pleasant, tasty, darker, yet without being complex in the true sense, or refined. Rating System: 5.0 - Perfect 4.5 - Exceptional 4.0 - Very Good 3.5 - Good 3.0 - Decent 2.5 - Average 2.0 - Below Average 1.5 - Barely Drinkable 1.0 - Undrinkable 0.5 - JB
About this bottle
Jameson Caskmates is a collaboration between the distillery and nearby brewery Franciscan Well. Brewmaster Shane Long asked to borrow some used Jameson casks to use for stout aging. When the casks were returned, they were refilled with cask strength blended Jameson and aged for about 6 months. 3,500 bottles were produced. Update: In 2019, the brewery used is Eight Degrees Brewing. Check the back of the bottle find info.

Really good, tastes like a sweet carribean rum. Ethanol and bananas on the nose, on the taste is creamy vanilla bakery notes, fresh oak woodiness, spicy, hefty amount of sugary sweetness for a whiskey, slight tart, slightly velvety texture but 40% abv is still very much apparent with how thin it feels, faint metallic shortbread dairy, fluffy, airy whipped cream aftertaste and slight oak and vanilla, very soft and easy to sip, not that funky, but also not super flavorful, lots of ethanol, and a bit of harshness sting/burn throughout, very clean alcohol taste (probably due to triple distillation). Great every day whiskey due to its sweetness and light flavor, maybe a little too great, because of how plush it is up front. Very rummy, and sweeter than some cheap bourbon. My first Jameson, and I like this one, so far. Second bottle I opened has less bite, is more savory, with more vanilla and hints of some kind of smoke, or burnt sugar. I do like the second bottle more, as it seems to have a little more flavor, and less sting/woodiness, but seems maybe just slightly thinner.
Embarking on a flavor journey, the Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition is a departure from the ordinary. Its allure lies in a darker, captivating hue, introducing a symphony of aromas – think milk chocolate, malt, and a teasing hint of fragrant hops. The experience takes a turn with a mouthfeel that's not just rich but downright lavish, thanks to the stout aging process. Yet, the plot thickens with a finish that defies expectations – surprisingly brief and somewhat dry. What follows is a lighter-than-anticipated aftertaste, revealing subtle notes of black pepper. This whiskey isn't just a sip; it's an unconventional and thrilling experiment, painting outside the lines of the traditional Jameson palette. The Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition crafts an original narrative of flavor that keeps enthusiasts on the edge of their taste buds.
A balanced, Stout cask finished Irish Whiskey by Jameson Distillery Bow St. in Ireland in collaboration with Franciscan Well Brewery in Cork. Jameson would send over a bunch of empty Whiskey casks & Franciscan’s would use it to mature their barrel-aged Stout lager. Then, they would send those casks back to age the Irish Whiskey. “Caskmates!” It has an aromatic birth with notes of cut grass, pear, ripe apple, coffee bean, crush almonds, chocolate liqueur, hints of hops & clove; while a rich & complex life adds notes of marzipan, vanilla cream, hops, cocoa & oak; that leads to a long & balanced death with notes of milk chocolate & butterscotch. 79 N: sud, vanilka, trochu čokoláda, fíky, jemné tóny 22 T: nejprve hit alkoholu, pak trošku sud, lehce čokoláda, ale dost alkohol 19 F: střední, alkoholový, jemně čokoládový, sudový až lehce mokrá hlína 20 B: příjemná jemná vůně, nicméně v chuti celkem drsný alkohol, který všechno ostatní upozaďuje, což jen škoda, jsou tam jinak fajn čoko tóny. Dobrý na čichání, výrazně horší na pití 18
