About this bottle

This limited edition release from Kentucky Owl, Maighstir (may-stir), translates to "master" in Gaelic. This Kentucky straight bourbon was made in collaboration with Master Blender John Rhea and new Kentucky Owl Master Blender Maureen Robinson. Four, five, eight, and nine year-old bourbons were blended for this release, each with mash bill recipes featuring corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. These bourbons were selected specifically to convey a Scottish-inspired Kentucky bourbon whiskey. Bottled at 100 proof, it's available beginning September 2023. (SRP $150)

We can tell right off the bat that this release has some similarities to a blended Scotch. Perky, woody, high notes, with a hint of smoke, and a rich, thrumming bass line of malt. On the palate, there is a sweetness and a softness which comes from the corn and the wheat addition. A bit of rye spice kicks in at the tail end of the initital tasting. The body is medium-light, with an overall warming and relaxed mouthfeel. Nothing amiss here. The finish is extra long, gently ending on an oaky note. Exceptionally well blended, and the kind of whiskey that begs for just one more sip. Kentucky Owl continues to impress.

Huge fan of nutty and chunky peanut butter so being met mid-palate with a peanuty tatse was unexpectedly pleasing and enjoyable. The nuttines was followed by a spice note and soft notes of sweetness. The finish was lingering and lasted mostly mid palate but there's more to explore with this dram.

On the nose i get chocolate and toffee, as well as peanuts. Smooth first sip with toffee, cinnamon, oak, char, and leather. Ice offers subtleties to each of the previous mentioned notes. This is a good offering from KY Owl and one i highly recommended.

Nose - herbal, vanilla, woody Palate - herbal but not overpowering, mild grain spice, vanilla, woody, subtle smoke at the end

Definitely tasty, but wildly overpriced. I paid $30 for a pour ($140 msrp). It tastes like a $50 bottle

Pleasant nose, grain forward on the palate. Gives “sweet tea” vibes. Medium to long finish
