About this bottle

Espadín is a work horse. It matures in a relatively short time 5-8 years, it produces a lot of sugar, and it is easily cultivated. It is so easily marked by the hands of the mezcalero that it can take on a multitude of characteristics and levels of quality. Made traditionally in Oaxaca by Pedro Hernández, this mezcal is double-distilled in a copper still and is bottled at 94 proof.

When you first nose this you get one dominant note- Rubber! Think freshly paved road and that's essentially what your smelling. Once it opens up, then you get clay, mesquite wood ash, and roasted agave. Taste is similar, big rubber notes and lots of smoke, followed by a vegetal note/roasted agave, and mineral notes. It would be top shelf, but what brings it down is that it is very alcoholic. At times you can work with it and other times it gets very hot that it'll numb you.

This is an excellent mezcal. It has the traditional notes you'd expect from a Espadín Joven, but the big unique point to this bottle is the sweet fruit notes that limit the alcohol flavor of entry level mezcals. Before trying this, I thought Mezcal Union was a great starting selling point for people new to mezcal, but now this Koch El definitely takes the lead as best entry points to the mezcal world.

Yak Ogg 5.0

One of the best handcrafted mezcal's around, you will find fine herbal and coconut notes on it, give it a try next time you are on the move looking for a high quality mezcal!

MC Drammer 3.8

This is a really nice Mezcal at a very good price. Nice, bright citrus nose with a wisp of smoke. Taste takes a 180 into savory vegetal territory. Great experience.

vannarae 5.0

So much more smooth, with a hint of caramel, than Los Siete Misterios

Absolutely amazing. Citrus, herbs, smoke at the end. 95
