I had a Kurayoshi tasting night, and i had the Sherry Cask, the 12yo and the 18yo. Got to say this one was the loser on that night, because even if it is not a bad whisky, it is not something you will remember. Actually Kurayoshi is a blended malt (pure malt in japan) from scottish and japanese whiskies, from the Matsui distillery. Bottled at 43%abv On the nose, it is an speyside whisky doppelganger with a little earthy note (which i found in every Kurayoshi).full Citric notes. Toffee. Grapefruit, Strong alcohol note; passion fruit. Earthy and Citric. Raw rice and Floral notes like a cheap Air freshener from a Taxi (a cab). On the palate, too straightforward, but nice i guess. Dulce de leche (toffee), citric and pepper. Aftertaste is intersting. Earthy like mud. Ginger. Very dry. Overall this is a whisky that is not bad, but lacks emotion. I guess that it's intention is to compete with other 12 year old whiskies out there (which might be the whiskies top competition) and for that purpose, it is a good offer. 77 over 100.

A rich, Japanese Pure Malt Whisky by the Matsui Shuzo Distillery in the Tottori Prefecture, Japan within sight of Mount Daisen. It is made with spring water filtered through volcanic stone; a blend of a 100% malted barley Whisky from Scotland & Japan aged in new lightly charred oak casks for 12 years. It has an aromatic birth with notes of vanilla toffee, warm roasted nuts & malt; while a rich life adds notes of green apple, pear, sultanas, toasted oak & a hint of tart cherry; that led to a smooth & delicate death with notes of chocolate, minerals & peat. Nose vanilla beans and rich deep chocolate are front. Not getting any peat but I just had a pretty peaty whiskey before. Taste - apple skins surprised me with gentle nuts and an gentle oily mouth. It fades into a gentle burn with some spices. Finish - spices and heat on the tongue with some vanilla and caramel smoothing it out. Very faint whisps of peat or smoke with some sea salt.

Nose: macallan-esq sherry apricot nose with caramel and pepper Body: medium Palate: malt, vanilla Finish: medium Note: this one is ok, not enough body. I guess I don’t see what the fuss is about with these Japanese malts. They seem to fall flat for me. And again more rice.

Woody earthy slight fruity in the nose hints of scotch, full mouth feel that’s quite tasty. More heat than I would like in the end. Slight smoke comes thru late that adds to the experience after the heat dissipates. Overall a good pour. Thanks Anji!

The cherry and vanilla come thru right from the start. There is a spicy middle that fades into a quick finish. There is a hint of peat in the finish. I’d buy this at $40-$50. But I don’t think I’d spend much more than that.
