About this bottle

For this release, Laphroaig combined selections from its Quarter Cask, PX Cask, Triple Wood and Ten-Year Old Casks - different maturation styles and oaks - together in one whisky. Master Distiller John Campbell produced this Scotch in honor of Ian Hunter, the last family member to own Laphroiag. Hunter had an affinity for whiskies aged in both bourbon and European oak, combining the new with the classic.

Nose - a sweet peatyness Taste - briney peat, no where as strong as the 10 year, not as medicinal at all, I quite enjoy this one Finish - campfire smoke, no other words can describe this and I love it Score - 4.0, solid choice in my book Scoring Legend 5.0 - Outstanding, unmatched to others 4.5 - Excellent, I will always keep a bottle in stock if possible 4.0 - Very good, quite enjoyable to drink, can consider as a solid choice 3.5 - Good, would taste again 3.0 - Average 2.5 - Acceptable, still drinkable 2.0 - Inferior, able to drink but not enjoyable 1.5 and below—wouldn’t drink again unless I am desperate

On the nose there is an intense amount of peat and smoke. Iodine at first than some bartlett pear and gentle lemon. On the palate there is a lot of the peat and wafts of smoke. Brine and malt follow. Not for everyone, and definitely not for anyone who likes sweet whiskeys. This would be a fantastic mixer for Penicillin's, Rusty Nails, or any other cocktail in need of a smokey, briny scotch. I will have to experiment. Overall: Nose: 2/5 Taste: 2.5/5 Overall: 2.25/5 Repurchase: No Type: Mixer

Nose: slight phenols, a bit of peat, slight smoke. A slight hint of fruit (berry?) from the sherry casks. A touch of charred wood. Palate: a strong malty note, getting a tiny bit of the iodine/medicinal notes but way more toned down than normal. Sweeter than the 10 I remember. A tiny bit of fruit here. A hint of oak here too. More flat than the 10. Mild vanilla. Really low ABV. Finish: not as lingering and oily as the 10, but still there a bit.

I read and watched a lot of reviews on this one. I am a big fan of the 10. My take is, given the cost of living crises across the world and the foreseeable global recession - this is a solid dram especially if the 10year old is out of you budget. Smokey, Peated sweetness, medicinal and, with a hint of iodine and salty went well paired with smoked cheddar on cream cracker. This would be a easy go to on my shelf.

Aroma: Lovely, fairly hefty smokiness that resembles campfire smoke with touches of fruit and peat Taste: A bit underwhelming, silky smoky flavour with a bit of sweetness, very little else going on Finish: Fairly short, mostly just lingering wood char flavour Overall: Decent whisky, it's a bit uneventful on the taste but it's pleasant and for the price, it's great.

I like the smell of the Select. It smells like Laphroaig 10 but sweeter. I do get less peat on the nose as well. The taste is good, but not as good as it's non-select sibling. The finish is where the original pulls away from this expression. While good, in my opinion, this is no replacement for my Laphroaig 10.
