About this bottle

Larceny Small Batch is a brand extension of Heaven Hill's Old Fitzgerald line. According to their story, back in the day, John E. Fitzgerald used his privilege of holding the keys to Pappy Van Winkle's bonded warehouse, where the Old Fitzgerald bourbons were kept, to steal the best casks for himself. These became known as the "Fitzgerald Barrels." Larceny is a wheated straight bourbon made from a blend of selected barrels made in honor of this legend. It bears no-age statement and is bottled at 92 proof. Note: Packaging update in summer 2024 to feature the key and keyhole as well as the wheated bourbon mash bill.

Continuing to work through the unreviewed bottles in my collection. Also continuing my Pantone color-identification test. Pantone 152 seems to be quite bourbonesque, combining aspects of what I've referred to as burnt orange and mahogany (clear, of course). The color of the Larceny is identical to the Weller Special Reserve tasted alongside it. The Larceny shows a not-insignificant dusty/musty note on the nose. Underneath that is some caramel and spice cake. The palate is an improvement, and is slightly more viscous than the WSR; the 92 proof comes off as more integrated than WSR's 90. Again like the WSR, there is a woody tannic bitterness on the finish, along with some vanilla. I love the different releases of the Larceny Barrel Proof far more than this, it's "younger brother." But it's not just the higher proof that I like: I enjoy both Elijah Craig and its Barrel-Proof version (both of which, like Larceny, are also Heaven Hill products). Like the WSR tasted with it, Larceny isn't a sipper for me, or even a daily drinker; but unlike the WSR, I do not feel compelled to keep this one on hand. 3.0 on the Distiller scale. N.B.: All spirits tasted neat in a Glencairn glass.

Banana bread on the nose. I could sniff this all day. I get banana bread and caramel on the palate with a little bit of orange sneaking in there at the end. This wheater is a great bargain for your buck, and it has a good story to go with it. Update: While the contents of my previous bottle gave me slightly bad breath the morning after I drank it, I've not had that happen with my current bottle. Perhaps my last bottle came from a bad batch, or perhaps my cavity that I had filled took care of the issue.

Meh, i was expecting great flavor from this Wheated Bourbon, but for the price, can't complain. Nose is fair with baking spices, shift wheat and maybe cinnamon/vanilla. Taste is spicy, hot cinnamon, wheat and not too much more, little oakey. Finish falls off fast and doesn't leave a memorable impression. For the price ok, but probably will be better as a mixer in an old fashion or something. Heck of a price at Bottles in East Providence! Get it while it's cheap, wouldn't pay more than $25.

Larceny on the whole comes across as pretty light and bright for a bourbon. Only some amount of rather freshly cut wood in the nose, hints of maple syrup. Flavor also very light with only some woodiness and sweetness floating around as well as a quick burst of white wine when swallowing. With coke it seems to cancel out some of the sweetness, making for an overall light and weirdly muddled impression of less sweet coke with the slightest amount of wood and some white wine acidity.

Kicking this glass off, the Nose gives strong Oak/Wood Aromos with a hint of cinammon. As you jump into the Palate you may be surprised with Valentines sweet heart candy and then an immediate spiral into spicy black pepper at the back end of the Palate which lasts into the short Finish this bottle provides. As the Finish subsides, the sweetness of the candied Initial Palate returns before the Finish concludes into a waxy coat over your tongue.

Nose: cherries and oak, cherries and oak, cherries and oak. Taste: unlike Makers Mark which also has a flavorful cherries and oak smell, Larceny’s does not carry over to the palate. Just ethanol and wheat spice. Bitter. Finish: short. The older Fitzgeralds are great (too bad you can’t find them anywhere). But this is not. Occasionally a barrel pick will shine but I mostly avoid this. Makers is better in every way.
