About this bottle

This Hors d'Âge from Marie Duffau is made using a combination of all four varietals permitted for armagnac. The fields of the family are split 70% for ugni blanc, 20% for baco blanc, 5% for colombard, and 5% for folle blanche. Although Hors d'Âge only need to be aged for 10 years, this bears an age statement of 12 years so all the eaux-de-vie in the bottle is at least that old. The house of Delord bottles their armagnac under two labels to honor different sides of their family: Delord, their grandfather, the first distiller of the family, and Marie Duffau, their grandmother, the owner of the vineyards. Each generation of the family has kept the tradition of armagnac distillation alive since 1893.

This bottle was one of my first Armagnac's. It's one of the more popular options, especially in areas without a ton of options, but I still consider it a very solid choice and in cocktails it works great. On the nose I get oak, marzipan and raisins. The palate leans a bit on the sweeter side with vanilla, figs and the hint of tobacco. The finish has a bit of a burn, not too bad with some pepper notes. I don't anticipate this will blow you away, but it's a very solid Armagnac, especially for the price and a touch better than the Marie Duffau Napoleon in my opinion. In general, I think Armagnac is a better value and more interesting than cognac and this bottle is a good introduction for those who haven't tried it yet.

I come from a whiskey background so excuse me if I do this terribly wrong. Nose: light floral, very heavy presenting grapes. dense. fresh tobacco, light caramel. faint oak, vanilla Taste: Very heavy. Tobacco. Chocolate. strong oak finish. Entry is very sweet with light vanillas. The main problem with this is that it is too hot off the still. It presents as very alcohol forward in nose and taste until you add a few drops of water to it to temper it down and to reveal its flavors.
