Nose: Mild citrus (lemon), light herbal/grassy notes, faint hints of banana and coconut. Overall it's a breezy, clean nose with a soft profile and any overt ethanol aroma is well hidden in the background. Palate: The arrival is quite civilized with a surprisingly fruity flavour of dried dates and a delightful oily texture. It's sweet, but it's not too sweet, and becomes more drying as it develops. The development first shows a butterscotch flavour, and then later caramel, vanilla and molasses appear. Finish: Short. Mild citrus and a light touch of brown sugar. This is not a complex spirit, but at the price point you wouldn't expect it to be. It's a very acceptable, clean, middle-weight white rum with a balanced character that is neither too sweet nor too dry. If you have a particular dislike of overly sweet white rum this would be a good choice for use in mixed drinks. It is good value and good in cocktails, with just enough character. Having now tried most of the white rums in this price bracket (some of which are more akin to vodka than rum) it's the one I'd recommend as an affordable mixer. I also surprised myself with this. While writing this review I suddenly discovered my glass was empty and I realized I'd been enjoying it neat as a sipping rum. That's got to be push it to an above average rating. Mount Gay Silver Rum
About this bottle
In 2025, Mount Gay relaunched its Silver Rum in the US with a newly redeveloped blend by Master Blender Trudiann Branker. The rum is made from a combination of pot- and column-distilled rums, with the pot still portion aged for up to two years in American oak. It’s then double-filtered—once through charcoal—and contains no added sugar. This release comes in a 1L bottle and is primarily an on-premise offering for bars and restaurants in select U.S. markets, including CA, FL, TX, NV, NY, MA, RI, and CT.

There are few white rums that I would reach for to drink neat, but Mount Gay silver is one that actually holds up quite well. It also is relatively cheap and while it isn't a Rhum Agricole, it does taste pretty close to one. On the nose I get banana and tropical fruit. The palate is grassy (goes back to the Rhum Agricole part above), with a good amount of spice. The finish is pretty short, but only a slight bit of burn going down. If I hadn't known what I was pouring, I probably would have thought this was Barbancourt. They have very similar taste profiles from what I remember. I still like Barbancourts a bit better, but they are quite similar. I would recommend this white rum, just not as much as I recommend Privateer, Havana Club or the aforementioned Barbancourt.
Clear, rum, unaged with notes of rubbing alcohol, banana, and grapefruit. Second sip is juicy with caramel butterscotch and citrus peels. A good Mojito mixer.
Light with very subtle sweetness, citrus/tropical fruit and spice. Not the smoothest white rum but not harsh. $20 in Ontario.
Average rum for mixed drinks.
Fine for mixing very light
