About this bottle

Although Arabian Sea breezes temper the sub-tropical climate, whisky matures quickly in Goa, India. Six-row barley from northern India tastes grassier and less nutty than European and North American varieties and Paul John Edited showcases these attributes. Scotch-style single malt whisky from this relatively new distillery is slowly gaining notice among connoisseurs in Europe, Australia and North America. It speaks well of the future that Paul John’s whisky-makers prefer waiting until their whiskies are at their prime rather than rushing them to market. As a former Portuguese colony, Goa escaped British colonial rule and its sometimes dull palate, favoring earthy, savory spices. Edited is moderately peated and non-chillfiltered.

2019, 02 batch. Highland peat, juicy mint, grassy, morning dew, 70% dark chocolate, buttery, vanilla beans, pie crust, sultanas, baked apple, bosc pear, clove, a little toffee, nutty, roasted plantains. Quite mild, hardly any smokiness. Not sure what a hint of peat is, I guess they didn't use it to roast the barley like scotch? All in all, not bad considering the cheap quality packaging. Might try one of their other bottlings at some point, but this one wasn't impressive enough to ever pick up again. Too mild and fades too quickly. Opens up fully after about 3 weeks. Intense apricot, vegetal peat, plum, french vanilla, banana foster and butter intensify. Pretty nice. Would recommend Cardhu.

Another gifted bottle from my connection. This is lightly peated PJ. The tasting notes listed here are excellent. I will add some overall impressions. Fruit is pretty distant compared to Nirvana and the smoke is more melted resin than campfire. There is a healthy dose of raw vanilla on the palate and some nice malt notes. The peat influence is medicinal with a grassy earthy vibe. The bitterness on the finish is like crushed walnuts and the Indian spices are more laid back but there if you go looking. I would still go Amrut over PJ but this is good single malt distiller. Overall a solid tasty malt with some exotic flair......83/100......not a $50 bottle imo but much better than Nirvana

This whisky is a real treat: chocolate-mint notes, nuts, herbs, luxuriant creaminess, a beautiful oily texture that Amrut lacks, an elegant marriage of peat and spice and a subtle drop of dryness at the end. Not to mention a few fruity notes throughout (although I can't quite pin them down... cherry, maybe kiwi too?). This whisky is similar to Islay, but the peat style is different, more perfumed like Japanese peat and fruitier like French peat. The oily texture echos the fast aging, evoking the texture of Kavalan or P&M Corsican whisky. But otherwise, this website's review is pretty accurate.

Nose- initial hit of light camp smoke, which fades to reveal a dried fruit sweetness and raisins. Palate - peppery and full, spicy with dry tannins. Subtle peat comes through in the end followed by a suspended pleasant bitterness Finish - long, lingering with some peat with residual bitterness that is far from unpleasant. Overall a delicious balanced single malt with just the right amount of peat and smoke.

Nov 2019. Clear medium gold. Small tulip. Aromatic old furniture, leather, smoked cherrywood, wood fired bbq, toasted nuts, dark chocolate, and gram masala spicy in nose. Full body with oak, old leather, toasted pecan, gentle smoked campfire wood, dried herb and tiramisu in palate. Good balance medium long finish. Like a old wise gentleman sit by the lake fishing.

I was surprised how much I liked this bottle. Nose is subtle, with malt, cinnamon, mint, caramel, apple, and pear. There's also a bit of iodine/band-aids, but very slight. Body is light but creamy, with a finish that's longer than expected and a bit peppery. Would definitely buy another bottle, and I'm excited to explore other offerings from the distillery.
